Not knowing the situation I’m going to say no. You never know who is in the room or what rabbits they have in their hats. Just because you don’t think they can pull in these people doesn’t mean they can’t make it happen.
Pretty common to lie to clients about coverage. I’m always promised as a creative who is 100% focused on their account for at least 2 accounts
Every agency lies about network resources / capabilities. That's the #2 perk of getting absorbed. if you tell your client, they'll confront your CEO. Unless you're looking to go freelance, play along.
Not being a smart ass- just want clarification. When you say agency network, do you mean sister agencies of the same name in other cities, or different agencies held by the same holding company? Like a Leo client being told that they were tapping razorfish folks to solve the ask?
No
Things don't usually go south I would hold off on telling anything. It will work out
Hell NO. Remember who you work for. And no, this doesn’t make you unethical. You’re asking if you should throw your agency under the bus and possibly lose them a client.
Ok but if you were a brand director under the gun and asking for more resources and your agency is lying to you wouldn't you see this as unethical? And we will lose our client when we drop the ball on this anyway. Why lie and take their money? You guys say that's how it is everywhere but is that how we want to work?
CD OP you have to understand that's what we do in agency life. If you're not ready to play the game, then stick to photoshop. We out here to make money
So taking money to hire extra resources and then not using it is just our business? No wonder companies are looking for other ways to get creative.
@OP I agree that we all lose when clients are lied to and I think you’re right to feel uneasy about it. I am not advocating lying to clients. Our current life of cost consultants and procurement managers scrutinizing every detail of production is a direct result of previous generations lying to clients about costs and receiving kickbacks from production companies. This was still happening when I started out in the 90’s. Today, agencies sometimes overstate the scope of work at the beginning because getting it revised later is brutal, even if the client burns through resources. My issue is with you going to the client with your concerns instead of dealing with it internally. Telling your boss about your well founded concerns is risky but it feels to me like the right thing to do.
I've been on an account where client was annoyed we didn't have enough people handling. We had 6 employees on FTE but only 3 hired. They weren't happy with our work so we insisted we needed more FTEs. Somehow we ended up convincing them they needed to pay us for 8 FTEs and they completely didn't think to point out that only 3 of the original 6 FTEs they're paying for were actually hired.
In the end they agreed to pay for the 8 FTEs, I think after a few months we finally brought on like 1 more so they were paying for 8 and got 4.
This is how the game is played, it doesn't make sense but we are doing it. "We are staffing up" we'll tell them. Meanwhile people leave before more are hired. It is a beautiful craft.
