Take the best parts of your mentors and try to emulate in your own way. Know they're human and so are you, too. The best people I've found as role models are those who strive for excellence for themselves and those around them, not those who think they are excellent.
No point in putting anyone on a pedestal. Maybe you can gently help them.
Ugh, I kind of tried, but she tends to be kind of stubborn. She is now in another part of the company and I rarely see her. She once flat out said, "you should not look up to me." It was not in a humble way. I was like, hmm, wow, is that a red flag for her self esteem? I thought that she was a badass working mom! My husband always told me that she seemed immature and I now see it. Oh well. I will say that it is important for there to be female role models in the office.
I have had that happen to me. Looked upto to some dude and he turned out to be flat out psychopath. We live and learn and move on. My lesson was not to place my trust on people so easily. You actually have to go through stuff with people, before they are worthy of your trust and respect.
A1- that is really excellent advice and I totally agree. Yes, you can see people's true colors when times get rough. That is when I learned how pathetic she was. Very good lesson learned for the future.
A2- it was a string of management decisions that she made that made me lose respect for her. I disagreed with them and they played out to be bad decisions
Curious what happened? Bc so many of our great business or political leaders I look up to when you read their biographies they were awful at personal life
Not sure you shouldn't separate the person from the job?
