I keep seeing posts that associates at mid-size/biglaw firms don’t get given the opportunity to go to court. Is this true across most larger firms, even if you lateral with some experience?

Does anyone send out handwritten Christmas cards? (Ie. to a mentor you met at a networking event)

I’ve practiced litigation in DC for about 5+ years at a larger plaintiffs’ firm, and am considering a switch to a defense firm. Is there any insight to how many billable hours this would require, and how much time that would actually be? For reference, the firm has a 1900 billable hour requirement and the partner said I would have “no problem” fulfilling that based on the work they have.

What do you do to get yourself comfortable saying something doesn’t exist in an agreement or in case law? When i get questions like this (Ex. Does this contract have XYZ-type language?) I usually figure out the answer pretty quickly…but then I spend a ton of time trying to prove myself wrong. I got burned on a question like this as a 2nd yr, so I think I’m just hyper aware of the risk. I’ve been told I need to get “more efficient” though, so I’m trying to work on this. Any suggestions?

Fishies—does anyone know of a way to convert a deposition transcript to remove all page:line numbers? I’d like to use text-to-speech to listen to transcripts but I can’t in the normal format.

My wife is in sales at Mercedes and she has been averaging $200k a year and growing YoY. She loves her job, however she works long days and barely gets time off. We plan on having kids within the next year or two, and it’s highly u likely that she’ll be able to keep her current gig. We want to find a career that allows her to work remote or that at least gives her a better work life balance so that she can see her kids grow up. Should she get certifications to give her a shot at adtech?Too late?

Has anyone successfully made the career move from an HR specialization to an HRBP role? If so, how? I have been working for 7 years in a very niche HR specialization and while I wear many hats on the HR team, I feel like this is hard to express to recruiters or even get an interview for an HRBP role. I saw some sales managers discussing hiring strategies, especially for entry level roles (e.g. SDR, BDR).

One strategy that came up was having the applicant do 90 minutes of cold calling into real prospects with the hiring manager coaching.

What do you think of this approach? Would be curious to hear from both hiring manager perspectives and from candidate perspectives.

I’ve been in my current position (Bookkeeper) for 4 years now. I’m highly interested in taking the PHR, and I’m wondering if I would qualify for the 4 year HR professional job requirement to be eligible to test for the certificate. I joined fishbowl a month ago and while I’ve seen a couple contentious debates but I must say I’m pleasantly surprised at how respectfully ppl comment on this app even when disagreeing. Usually anonymity on the internet brings out the absolute worst in ppl; they type things anonymously that they would NEVER say in person smh. But I really haven’t seen horrible comments here. Protocol for responding (or not) to unsolicited emails from recruiters to your work email? In other words, is it acceptable to just ignore without a response? Or do you prefer to keep the line open with a brief “thanks for thinking of me, I am not interested at this time but hope we can collaborate in the future.”

Has anyone bought/ done the HRCI Certificate in Diversity and Inclusion in HR Management? I already have my PHR, but I’m looking to gain more knowledge/skills and beef up my resume. Is it worth doing? The course is $239 and you get 12 Recert credits with it.

I’m seeing lots of posts about really bad losses. If you trade you’re going to lose money - hopefully not all the time, but many positions will be mistakes. But you need a process to find ideas and manage positions. Two books you should read are “The New Trading for a Livinng” and “The Laws of Trading.” Both look at psychology, process, and risk in different ways that can help you work out your own process. The next 18 months will be much harder than the last 18 - time to start learning.

Looking to buy a vacation home on the west coast not in a major city. West coast so it doesn’t take too long to get there. Could consider other areas, but don’t want to spend too much time traveling there. Budget is under $700k for 3 bedroom, at least 2k sqft. Any ideas?
