Tell me you’re a partner without telling me you’re a partner
The correct answer is a Honda Odyssey for a family.
As a real answer I’ve liked the ride of BMW over Mercedes personally but have only had an X3 and X5. X7 looks quite nice though.
I recently drove both for a week each and I went in leaning towards the X7 and came out loving the GLS without a question. The technology, fit and finish, dynamics of the Mercedes are far better than the X7 in my opinion. The semi-autonomous driving in the GLS worked flawlessly during my trip from LA to Palm Springs and was so comfortable, yet fun to drive. The interior of the GLS is more upscale and refined too.
Keep in mind, I type this owning a BMW X3 and X5….

I was just going through this exercise. Ended up with a Cayenne.
Out of the two I'd go bmw. I don't like the ride on the Mercedes SUVs. That said I've been driving BMWs for a decade so I'm biased.
Out of everything I've driven the Cayenne has been my favorite. Handles well, good acceleration in the S, and interior styling is nice. That said it is mostly personal preference as they are all nice.
Last thought. GLS 450 might be a little underpowered once loaded with people and luggage/stuff.

I did consider getting a 7 series or s class and throwing a car seat in back =]
Plenty of room for everyone, but they are way longer than the Cayenne which would make for miserable city driving.
It’s something we did a lot of research on ourselves. 450 had the edge with us as it comes with the key features we wanted standard. Add in the same features on the X7 and it’s more. Plus to us, it felt more plush (but the X7 felt edgier so it’s just a preference). Then we went and had a third kid so we ended up going with a Lincoln Navigator 🤷♂️
Definitely the X7. Then give me the GLS 450. Thanks!!
I had an older SLK230 as my first car (worked hard to buy it secondhand)- sporty. Then an ML350- comfy and sporty. GL450- comfy big bish. Now I have a GLE43- sporty big bish and older CLK55 for fun. Once you’ve had a Mercedes, everything else feels like a downgrade. The seats are amazing and the service at the dealers is always top-notch.
The CLK55 is a fun time. Currently sporting an S63.

Lexus GX > both

Turning an old GX into something like this would be awesome. Get some comfort plus land cruiser Prado capability =]
X7 drives like a real performance car, handles way better than the Benz
Rising Star
X7
I went with a q7, but would recommend the x7 over gls

Partner bonus time?
On my second X7 so a little biased. Have had two GLS450s in the past (2011 and 2014) and didn’t like the tech or the handling. The auto press says the new GLS handles better than the X7 (less body lean in the corners) so there’s that. I know the MB is supposed to have the more ‘opulent’ interior but honestly it’s a wash for me.
Net, net - they’re so similar in every way (different flavours of ice cream). Just pick the one you like the look of better.
