Don’t people go to Bain to get into PE? Why not skip a step?
If your goal is to get on the investing side you should go to Bain 100%, it’s not a detour
Couple thoughts:
1. Wow, 80% is a big difference! Assuming you’re coming in as a first year AC, you’ll need a couple years to close that gap but a few caveats: (1) There’s a meaningful retention bonus I think at 2.5-3 year mark that is likely not reflected in the offer (albeit not 80%), (2) Pay progression is pretty consistent at Bain, so think 20–30% annually.
2. Bain’s nice because you’ll have a big “class” of people you’ll get to know / become tight with, if that is meaningful to you. Could also be true at the PE firm!
3. Broader variety of work at Bain, vs. being an operator at the PE fund, to the extent it might matter for what you like / longer-term career
4. If you go to PE Ops and decide you hate it, can always go to b-school and switch back and vice versa
As a heads up Bain’s pay doesn’t increased 20-30% each year, it’s a 5k pay bump after the first year and then a 15k pay bump when you’re SAC
Rising Star
Bain will train you better, PE ops will be more fun and pay you more.

Owning the keys to the building and knowing your recommendations will be acted on is a lot more fun (IMO) than providing advice as a consultant.
