It takes about 3 years to move from Senior to Manager so not sure how you were passed for promo 2x unless you came in as an experienced hire but even then some people struggle initially.
With that said - think about your career holistically. Are you overall happy with your work and your practice at KPMG? Do you have a “brand” and are recognized as a high performer within your
practice? What were the reasons for not getting promoted last cycle and have you made the necessary changes to be a strong contender this cycle? Also keep in mind that your clock effectively resets when you join a new firm as a Senior so you have to go through the exercise of rebuilding your brand to get promoted so that will set you back by another 2-3 years.
I was in your shoes 5 years ago and made a decision to stay and double down on KPMG. No regrets so far. Happy to discuss further if you wish to DM me.
@D1 – Thank you for the reply. Yes, I joined as an experienced hire. The reason I was given for not getting promoted in the last cycle was that I didn’t do as well as others in the panel interviews. I love my team and the firm, but it’s frustrating to get passed 2x and feel like it could happen again. My group is pivoting from away from regulatory driven work because of the shift away from this type of work across the industry which is great, but I feel like we will have a bad year(s) because of the time it will take to refocus our efforts and pick up traction. That said, I doubt if they will be doling out too many promotions.
Senior to M typically takes 3 years although I know people who have done it in 2. If you are homegrown then it would take you 3 years, most likely for experienced hire as well unless you came in with a lot of experience and accepted the position of SA.
Think the move as SA to the new firm will be counter productive because you will need at least two years again to go to M. If the raise is only 25% at the new firm you will likely be making the same by the time you hit M there as you would staying at K assuming you get promoted this year.
PS- I got 24% raise from SA to M.
When does the pension vest?
I believe it’s 3 yrs
If you’re up for promo, I feel jumping for 25% isn’t worth it, since you’re likely going to see a 10-15% raise right?
Ya, was thinking the same thing, unless I don't get promoted again.
This is tough. I was in the same predicament before. I decided to stay and I didn’t get promoted again. It hurt, and I’m having to try again this yr. I do wish I would have taken the offer especially because the work hasn’t gotten better. Logically thinking, maybe you can delay starting the job until Mid year discussions are over. If you’re PML can’t give you some comfort that you’ll be promoted, keep the “bird in the hand”. It’ll give you a fresh start to create the future you want.
