Tell your friend that going into accounting is about as smart as becoming a librarian or a data entry specialist. Dead end career given the automation that is on the horizon.
I got a pat on the back for my masters - no one cared but my family. If they want something meaningful in accounting, I’d recommend CPA.
CPA all the way over Macc
I was caught in the changes back in 2003. I had plenty of overall hours to meet the 150, just needed the add'l accounting hours. I'd recommend - get the bachelors degree and get the add'l accounting hours and work expreince. Don't waste time (and money) on a masters.
You need 150 college credits for the CPA. You can do that with undergrad courses.
This is accurate, assuming OP's friend wants to be a CPA. In this industry, that is valued more highly than a master's degree.
Either bachelor's + extra hours, or master's. Either way, getting the CPA is the #1 priority.
I got my master's because it was not much extra $$ at the time, so figured might as well. But no one cares as long as you have the cpa.
A lot of schools try to scam students into thinking they need a masters to get the hours requirements for the cpa. I did all mine at undergrad and supplemented with credits from community college classes where I took courses online and for free or generally very cheap. Left school with far less debt and way quicker then if I had been scammed into a masters
Will their resume make sense if they do not have some accounting degree and they are applying for accounting jobs? My daughter did that and needed to answer questions about not having an accounting degree. Fortunately her father had an extensive network and she works for the Big 4.
Hi, I am also an accountant, tell your friend to go on a master's degree related to computers. There are a lot of jobs in states such as Michigan. Very well paid positions with technical backgrounds .
