That is an unprofessional response. I hope it wasn’t as crude and direct of a response as you said in the post. People, especially partners, don’t forget this kind of behavior. Sorry to say, but unless you are a rockstar which based on your response doesn’t look likely, if layoffs happen, that partner will recommend you.
Makes your response even worse.

This is a stupid post by an immature young adult that didn’t happen.
Let’s be 100% real. The ask is that you get trained on key topics that person is leading to provide some bridge support. Probably means attending a few meetings a week, learning a spreadsheet or two.
The ask is help support team, not double your workload. If you’re at 100% already, the correct response from a mature adult is- got it, would love to support the team, right now my bandwidth is already stretched on xyz, can we talk about pieces we can deprioritize together to support the new work.

bro really thinks he got a zinger there 💀
You’re not wrong to push back (one year is ridiculous) but the response and language was highly unprofessional. I’d roll you off if only out of fear you’d talk to clients like that.

How long is the sabbatical?
Looks like only here people understand how unreasonable this shit is
Sorry OP but This reflects poorly on you and as a bad team player. Everyone covers for each other in a team. Do you need extra pay for everything? I mean it’s really crazy to say something like that to a partner.
Normal coverage doesn’t apply during a sabbatical….
You’re missing important context. Are you already working a full 45 hours? No fluff in there no guestimation but a full 45 hrs? If so, ask the partner to help you prioritize which tasks between your current scope and new scope to complete in your 45 hrs. If you’re not fully utilized and pushing back because this “isn’t your job” that’s not the right view.
No partner has ever helped prioritize a task.
You should instead ask the partner if he can help you delegate xyz tasks to others.
Awful way to respond you’re an idiot for that. Why not just say can we talk about what the workload is going to be my plate is full? He doesn’t expect you to work 80 hours a week to cover both jobs if that was what’s required
Assuming this is one of the big consulting companies, how do they even make this happen for a salaried employee?…change the company rules to allow and provide overtime pay rate or give them a temporary rate hike for the duration of the sabbatical and then go back to regular rate once the colleague returns? Everyone knows this can’t be done and only sounds possible for a contractor. Sounds like a story that didn’t happen, but agree with others that it’s just dumb to bring that up and better to just flat out say no you can’t.
I like that you did this! Clearly everybody is a bunch of 🐱.
Is this total cost basis client project or hourly basis ? If it is hourly basis then, I would onboard someone from the bench to take on the extra work.. More billable hours for the firm! Otherwise, if I can manage for my team to do the work without the person taking a sabbatical in an overall cost basis project then I would tell my high performers they would get more bonus End of Year if they are up to it (everyone is happy! Including the client) incentives work better than threats... 🎤 🖐🏼
OP, you're not wrong to push back, but from what you've described, you were too blunt about it. Rather than make it solely about your comp, explain that your plate is full and ask what will be re-prioritized off it. As others have put it, say no without saying no. That way you keep some control over what amounts to a negotiation.

OP has been watching too many Laura Whaley TikToks.
You’re not wrong to make the request, though. The more tactful (and likely successful) method of doing this in consulting is to ask if someone from the bench can be plugged in while your teammate is on sabbatical since the hours/fees/margin should net out to expectations, and the team won’t burn out.
I mean, this is what people do for each other- they cover for others while they’re out. If you can’t swing it, it’s worth a discussion. But to just say pay me more just sends the message you aren’t a team player. I welcome the ability to cover for someone else with the knowledge others will fully cover for me when I’m out too. That’s how it works. You should examine your inability to be a team player
Reading the responses - we missed the point. A partner ask a junior to cover someone else’s workload so yes - they deserve compensation or they can say no. It is the partner’s responsibility to hire / backfill the work. Not the junior to cover
And hence the point that it didn’t happen. Its like my 3 year old telling daycare friends that pilot asked him to fly the plane
I'd roll you off same day
Ok Boomer
sad commentary when the first thought it to fire the guy! Are we not allowed to make a mistake or have a down day? Maybe this would be a good time to apply our culture and communicate and mentor.
Firing them does not ruin there life. It’s not a mistake, this is clearly an intentional misrepresentation. This person will hopefully learn a valuable life lesson, which is more valuable long run than teaching them that it’s ok to win work under false pretenses. Nobody is saying they can’t go get another job.
Giving this person a pass doesn’t just impact them, it impacts everyone else on their team, it impacts how our clients perceive us, and it impacts the next candidate who might have gotten that job if this person hadn’t lied. There’s no need to reward that behavior.
Our culture should reward character, performance, ethics, and a team based approach. This person has violated 3 out of the 4.

Sabbatical or secondment? If I take a sabbatical the last thing I'm doing is going to a client.
He should be though
Not living to Together core values. Work elsewhere.
I think what SM and others are responding to is the shift in tone that seems to have taken place in the last few years. While I admire the dedication to work life balance, there’s also part of this that immediately comes across as “I’m looking out for myself, not the team.”
That said, right answer is probably to get surge support. Unless it’s truly 1-2 small tasks in which case, the author could step up a bit.
SA1, beyind being a team player and looking out for oneself, a third element to consider is compensation. It shouldn't escape notice that an employer asking a worker to work twice as much typically doesn't come with twice the compensation. Ymmv, but I've been asked in the past to work 50-100% harder for "a good chance" at a 10-15% bonus. I'd be much more willing to take on extra work if there was something meaningful in it for me versus just a big increase in project profitability.
This feels like a gen z trend.. and I’m not mad about it. I personally think we should get paid overtime. Probably not the time or place for a comp convo but good try
Agree D6. And maybe if we got overtime, leaders would take more care in accurately scoping projects and being effective leaders (providing good feedback the first time, communicating their vision to their teams, holding middle managers accountable to do more than kiss up, prioritizing building a good team culture that makes people want to stay, etc.). I understand OPs and Gen Z’s frustration, though agree that was not a tactful/helpful response. Far too long has consulting taken advantage of junior practitioners that are eager to please by giving them too much work and then gaslighting them by saying they’re ‘not a team player’ or ‘not a culture fit’ when they are upset about being burnt out
You’re coming from the right place though even if I personally never would’ve said it that way haha. If there was an entire resource doing the work, then they should get a new resource on the team and not give the work to other people (or just 1 person??). Now I don’t know the structure of the team, workload, etc. in your situation. I had a partner do this to me once on an already lean team and it was terrible. I had to continually advocate for myself and it was a no win situation. Was finally able to get him to replace this person but it was awful for a long time. It’s not like the person on sabbatical even came back lol. To add in response to D2’s post above…those tasks being called out are covering for a vacation tasks not doing someone’s entire job tasks while they’re on sabbatical for 6-12 months. No one would care about vacation tasks but taking on two jobs is unreasonable.
Wow the sheeps are really popping through in these responses 😳 you did the right thing! And if you have to take a new job to keep your values then so be it, but never be more loyal to a company/job than you are to yourself. What some of these fish obviously don’t know is that no matter how much work you do for how cheap, these companies will cut their most loyal dedicated employee without thinking twice we mean nothing to them lol. So keep this mentality, as long as you are deserving you will get paid!
