Wow! I was very afraid of another student in middle school, and the teacher turned a deaf ear and completely ignored the situation. I’m glad you followed through.

My daughter went through this kind of situation in middle school, thankful and few of other students stepped up and were her friends. That kind of calmed the bullying down
In the past this report would be clear cut - a threat of violence and suspension. However - today everything is under the lens of a perceived power differential. We have over corrected to the point that the administration may take into account the intersectional ways in which the perpetrators could actually be victims in this. Mean girls weaponizing their power over other boys to mug a boy in order to appease the mob of a scorned girl , may be turned into a biased reporting scandal for the boy who will be turned out as a sexist misogynist. I hope it’s not so.

In a way it has been beneficial for the student, since he has been having other boys start being friendly. One of the boys and the student were close when they were in elementary, and now they have reconnected
Where is civility now?

I honestly wonder if it exists. The student everyone loves versus the kid who is a talker in class, loves discussing the lesson, is quick to step up to help, but who is also brutally honest. The kiddo who is popular gets by with being a bully to the other student because he knows who to manipulate the staff.
