I was in the final stages of an interview with Microsoft two weeks ago, in partner marketing. Then the recruiter told me they were putting the hiring process on hold to assess the need for the role. Well, then we heard about Microsoft layoffs last week. Seems like most were in Xbox and Project Alpha but there’s not a lot of information out there. Should I hold out any hope that I’m going to get this job? Any insights on how much these layoffs have impacted the marketing org and/or new hiring?

Stop. I’m assuming you are younger, and younger attorneys struggle with feeling guilt when they are doing anything other than work if they can do it at the moment.
Take the coverage and make sure everything is moving forward and contribute some hours here and there if you feel inclined to do so or want a distraction or break from the situation but try to give yourself some type of slack here. It won’t help in the long run
I dealt with this when my mom was passing... There's no right or wrong way to deal with it. I brought my computer to the hospital and would pop on to do work when I felt like it and when I needed a distraction. Don't be too hard on yourself for not being productive - this is definitely not the time for that.
Take a leave or go reduced time for the month. Now. You’ll never get this time back.
You are not going to regret the time you spent with your loved one. Try to go easy on yourself, and take the time off.
Don’t work at all
I understand this feeling. Sometimes work can be a welcome distraction from your grief, and that is okay. My best suggestion is to set aside blocks of time to work (maybe 1-2 hours -- whatever length of time feels okay for you to be apart from your loved one without creating anxiety or stress for you), then work in a different room that’s free from any reminders of the person who is dying. I’ve found it’s very hard to focus on work when you’re in close proximity to your loved one or in a place where there are visual/auditory flags of that person, and it’s also hard to feel present with the person when you’re trying to multitask and get work stuff done. Try to separate the two, if you can, which can help you be more in the moment for either scenario. Sending you peace and strength as you navigate this.
