Advice please! I have $200k in a savings account (on top of 6 mos. emergency $) and plan to retire in 10 yrs. I'm VERY risk averse and would stash it in a CD but rates are so low. What to do? I don't want to risk losing $ but feel I am in a way by not doing anything with it...

I have a great variable annuity I would love to show you.

funny

How old are you?

The reality is that this isn’t nearly enough to retire within 10 years unless you take big gambles right now. You can easily model this out on retirement calculators.

I’d personally invest some in Bitcoin if your time horizon is 10 years.

Low cost index fund.

Hard to say without knowing the full picture. How much do you have in total and how much do you need each year in retirement? How much do you plan to save for retirement over the next 10 years. Without more info, no one can really help.

like

Target date fund. You can’t be too risk averse or inflation will eat away a big chunk of your savings over the decades you’ll be retired.

like

I know people say you can’t time the market, but if you’re thinking 10 years, there’s a very high likelihood of a significant market drop in that time frame. There is definitely a bubble in certain sectors.

Are you planning to use this $200k for retirement living? Or do you have other sources?

Sorry I'm not following, is the $200k outside of other retirement funds?

They have also said they have some in a retirement account and they have 10 more years to save more

Pay down mortgage?

Define your risk aversion. Are you ok making market (VTSAX) or are you looking to keep the cash at inflation?

Dividend stocks might be a good choice if you're concerned about the market right now. Can then rebalance some into index funds if there's a dip.

Bonds pay basically nothing right now, hardly better than cash...

Probably the antithesis of this bowl - but need some advice. This is for a house in a Southern metro. Built in 1960s completely remodeled in 2000s with some very recent additional remodeling of kitchen and bathrooms. Well kept house. The price will be nearly $1M, the same as something built in 2010+ with similar square footage (because a lot of the price is the lot, its a super expensive zip). Should I steer clear because of the age? Will it cost a ton in maintenance and utility bills?

How do people afford to buy $1M houses in Chicago? Surely not everyone buying them is rich (which is somewhat of a subjective term). My wife and I are 30 and have a combined income of almost $300k and trying to buy something that expensive seems asinine yet people do it. Am I missing something?

Due to a family situation we are looking to move to a different state. Normally we would sell our current home and buy a new home in our new location. However, with todays prices and interest, will it make more sense to rent out our current home and rent a home ourselves vs. selling and buying immediately when we move? We are moving from Vegas to Sacramento and we are not sure how long we would stay in the new area. Thoughts?

My investing strategy is just to DCA into an S&P 500 index fund and keep buying and holding. If I understand correctly, the sole disadvantage this has compared to a tax sheltered retirement account is that the quarterly dividends will be taxed? But even so, they’ll be taxed at a lower qualified dividend rate since I’m automatically reinvesting those dividends.
