Temporary. Everywhere, not just big tech.
There is alot of truth in your comments. We were taught that the company rewarded loyalty, determination, sacrifice, etc. But it is based on the culture and not so much as policy. Policy is used only as a tool to get rid of someone who has offended a new manager or the friend of one.
How would you explain working for a major company, when the year before you earned 17-18 power of you awards, with each one worth $25.00 to $250.00. Only to be told the next year with new people new leaders in place that your work is suddenly not up to par.
You find a quality and safety issue that cost the company a good deal of money to pull off the shelves and should have cost a few people their jobs.
Co-workers, many you considered friends, to just turn the other way while you got burned. No longer company loyalty providing the attitude of the bosses only their desire to see you gone. Then about a year later the cover up was exposed and the company terminated the plant manager
Department manager, line manager, not forhaving participated in the cover up, but for being outsiders and convenient.
Loyalty would have come to me and offered my employment back.
I guided my life around loyalty. But not certain I will anymore.
So temporary and fleeting. I refuse to bend over backwards for a company anymore. Trust no employer.
Feeling that as well
Companies are even more so today only loyal to numbers on a piece of paper . They will use you until they no longer need you, just like a rented car.
Seems like no one has any Tegridy anymore. Sad!
There is no loyalty in the corporate world.
Company is calculating how fast they can let go of you. Shocked when my colleagues were walked out of office, asked to hand in ID like criminals at small K-drama streaming platform company..many ppl in shock

As someone who works remote, loyalty never exists to us.
I learned it the hard way as well
I think what you need to do is being loyal to yourself. Being loyal to yourself by giving 100% of your efforts in building your career, no matter where it is. When you’re giving the best version of yourself, companies that can see your value will appreciate and those that don’t will simply be a workplace. At it’s worst, we’re just numbers to the company at the end of the day.
Be loyal to yourself.
Any loyalty from an employer is just illusion
Loyalty is dirt cheap like my salary
My perspective working for the largest tech multinationals globally (2 in the top 3), over a 25 year career: you're only another number contributing to the quarterly targets and keeping shareholders pleased. Yes, there are perks from representing these companies, but don't expect loyalty.
This reminds me of a recent interview which I had with one of the biggest cybersecurity infrastructure payers in the industry. They looked at my CV and questioned my commitment because I had represented various companies with an average tenure of roughly 3 years. I told them I had been headhunted and made the change. They expressed concern that the same could happen to them if they hired me. I asked what guarantee do they give me that they will keep me on for a long period? They couldn't do it.
So, in summary, be respectful to the brand, but don't forget your personal ambitions, and don't be shy to be selfish when it comes to looking after yourself first.
This is the reality of the big tech industry.
I'm sorry, but are you in your 60s or older? What person under 40 thinks "long hours = employer loyalty?" That played out years ago. It's got nothing to do with tech jobs. That's how it is everywhere. The only job security that you have is your ability to get another job. That's the way that it should be. These days, employees job hop every few years, and the employer can't cry about how disloyal the employee is, but those same employees expect loyalty from employers.
Try spending 35 years in Tech only to have your job replaced by overseas hires. There’s absolutely ZERO loyalty by any of today’s big Tech employers. They make permanent choices cutting highly experienced and talented people to make their earnings look better for a single quarter. You need to constantly be looking for the next best opportunity and moving before they decide you’re unnecessary.
The less humanized is your interaction with the upper management, the less humane will be their regards of you.
If you're not really friendly with the top dogs, you're a resource.
Loyalty (to an employer) is always a temporary alignment of incentives.
I'll jump on the bandwagon and say what everyone else is saying but add more..You should never put the beliefs of loyalty and working for anyone else into the same thought. Unless you are running your own company, with your name on the Business license, you should never put your trust in an employer.
Also, and this seems to tightly entwine with false loyalty to a company - STOP LETTING COMPANIES WORK YOU MORE THAN STANDARD DAILY/WEEKLY HOURS! Too many people have I seen who believe that they must put in more than 8hrs/40hr weeks for their job. This is doing everyone a disservice - you, your employer, and anyone who wants to have a decent work/life balance and make more than peanuts. Remember that just because you may be getting a "healthy" salary, doesn't mean it is healthy when you break it down hourly if you are constantly working 50-60hr weeks.
Never assume you’re on a team. Never take on more responsibility without more money. Never be loyal to a company that will fire you in an heartbeat. Always Be interviewing.
Temporary loyalty is possible *only* if employers pay more than any other option That's it....I'm always looking and if I can earn $100/yr or more (scaled to relative cost of living)...time for a going away lunch.
You should never trust anyone. Yes, one should work hard and to their best. Trust is not something anyone should have in employers or in America today. We don't have morals anymore.
As an owner of an SMB it pains me to see how much loyalty is discounted today. I can certainly say I’ve made mistakes as a leader, not had empathy when it was warranted, viewed the situation through my own filters when a larger one was needed. I have always strived to give more than I get from my employees. Balancing the needs of the position, the team, the clients, the numbers and everyone’s own personal feelings, desires and goals is a Herculean effort that we will not get right every time. As any organization gets larger the individual supervisors and managers absolutely need to be held accountable to the same expectations that I would do if I was in their position and that unfortunately is what I feel is the missing piece that creates this sense of loyalty misalignment. The C level becomes out of touch with those that are driving the culture of the organization on the ground and it’s all about numbers. Numbers are critically important as it provides the health and understanding about what and how well the organization is doing but we must integrate how we are doing with our employees and what they’re expectations are.
The unfortunate truth even if an organization is doing all of those things very well large market shifts can suddenly leave any organization unhealthy to endure long term without financial changes that can include layoffs. It’s a terrible reality but I also feel that companies should have a suitable provision to ensure employees that have performed with excellence; have a runway when it happens to say, “I’m so sorry this is happening but we want to make sure you have every opportunity to find your next place and do it with some measure of provision.” that says Thankyou.
