I feel like the MBA offramp is one of the greatest disillusions. Unlike in accounting, you aren’t going to be fast tracked into a full time offer before you graduate.
When I wanted to pivot out of accounting, MBA programs were the first thing I looked at. Then I realize I’d have to take coursework in accounting and finance, and thought that would be a total waste of my time and money. I ended up pursuing some thing I’m passionate about, a masters in leadership studies. I leveraged that into a very happy and lucrative career. Follow your heart and not the story of a golden ticket.💛
Also most people coming from business backgrounds are not getting their MBAs for the academics lol. It’s basically recruiting prep + a way to build your network + vacation from work. Masters in leadership sounds like hogwash and likely offered zero tangible benefits. Could’ve just switched out without the extra $$$ and years wasted
An MBA is the tried and true way to pivot careers, generally worth the student loans and lost wages as long as you get into a top program.
Graduates who enter management consulting can break $200K their first year out.
Worth it if u really think u can cut it in competitive fields. There are a lot of MBA hires who leave kind of early though. But yeah banking and consulting pay way more than accounting with better exit opportunities. I’d only go to a M7 though T10/15 will suffice for these opportunities
I do have an MBA degree but I was enrolled in a part-time evening program. Additionally, I didn't pay for it since the company that I worked for offered a generous tuition reimbursement program.
That being said, I agree with all of the other comments. If you get accepted to a top tier MBA program it would be worth it. Many consulting firms and investment firms only hire graduates of top MBA programs.
