Answer to your original question, no, you can just buy VTI manually.
If your account is with Fidelity, your alternatives are FZROX or FSKAX.
If you do decide to go with VTSAX then consider opening an account with Vanguard. They don't charge purchase fees on Vanguard funds
Yeah I personally only buy fidelity funds from Fidelity so there aren’t additional fees. As long as it tracks the same index and has about the same fees I wouldn’t expect much difference of a return
You should consider buying VTI over VTSAX ($75 fee is onerous) and over Fidelity choices which often have higher expense ratios.
Should you transfer accounts to VG later and decide to sell your Fidelity funds, you’ll likely have to pay capital gains on profits.
