Sweatiest of sweatshops
It depends entirely on who you work for. Some partners will work you to death with little thanks, others will do their best to protect your time, mentor you and go to bat for you. Shoutout to Ariel.
I mean it’s about as sweaty as you can get. I generally think people put too much emphasis on hours expectations, but for PWs PE group it would definitely make me nervous that I would wash out after 6 months or something
We don’t have a dedicated PE group, m&a does both and it’s sweaty for sure

I don’t think it gets worse

Highly concentrated among a few clients, makes it a poor career choice compared to places like K&E and Ropes. If you want V10 PE, K&E and STB are almost always the right choice.
But firms like Ropes are predominantly middle market PE. I get STB and KE, but I don't think PW is that far off as you're suggesting.
That group is much better at strategic M&A than PE (in my opinion). I’d take STB, K&E, Latham, and Debevoise over them. I’d also consider Weil, Willkie, DPW, Ropes, and a few others. It’s a great brand, but not the best experience.

That's what I've heard as well about the departures. The blackbox/NEP seems to still be in infancy from what I hear, so I'm not sure they even know how it will be utilized. Certainly getting more political tho. But I don't see the UK play as making much sense unless they plan to get aggressive in PE. Will be interesting to see if they do build out PE if it's under Barshay/Kindler umbrella or Sadchev. The new LA office also seems to suggest a bigger play in US around this team.
It doesnt get any worst the PW m&A and PE. Worst sweatshop there is. More known for public m&a where KE is the big PE shop
They took some folks from my firm a while ago and while they are really good lawyers, they have no concept of life outside of working the next deal. If that’s you too, great place to be.
