Best thread in awhile! Encouraging to hear from the women out there making this work with kids. It can be daunting looking ahead to this point in life. You are inspiring!
I'm also the breadwinner by far so it's tough to give up the pay and benefits.
Accenture had a great program where a new mom can work local for a year with no question asked. I have worked with couple of ladies who has kids at home and I agree with precious post- have to have a solid support system. This won't work if your support system is Not ok with you traveling. So figure all of those shit out before you pop a kid
Go internal for a couple of years then come back out. Don't miss those precious yrs with the kids.
Have a 2.5 year old and pregnant with another. I keep travel to three days per week and it works fine.
Must have a very supportive family structure. Also must be upfront with management as to the amt of travel you're willing/can make.
There's no one right answer.. You have to do what's right for you.
Good to have kids early in your career, in my experience. I have four - went internal after number 3. It was easier to come back after my maternity leave as a manager instead of senior manager. The expectation level gets amped up even for an internal role. The run way to transition back in is much shorter and harder. Considering going back into industry after 10 years with the firm since I don't feel that I can give what the firm is asking at this level.
I do, but I don't travel much.
Yes two kids. I took local gigs for about 4 years and am back on the road now. It's tough but I feel like I'm giving up a great career if I choose internal or industry.
Thank you everyone for your posts. Don't have kids yet but I will be there soon, and it is helpful to hear from those who have made it work!
My SO is also a Consultant. I feel like with our travel schedule even making kids is going to be a challenge.
C1 my husband met me at my hotel for our first kid! It was a 2 hr drive from home.
