I only know a couple. The profession was much smaller back then, but still, it is odd to see how few multi generational consulting families there are. I worry it's because the kids see the sacrifices.
Who would do this to their child?
Yeah fair enough. My dad worked and traveled non stop, but then again, as a family we enjoyed luxuries and benefits we might not have otherwise. Plus he taught me everything there is to know about excel before I even hit college 😂
Both my parents were auditors (at big 4) before I was born so they were really helpful on tip to traveling every week.
Now that you say it, it's true! I'm trying to picture someone's grandfather telling me that they were a consultant, and it seems ludicrous. None of my friends parents were consultants, but then again I went to public school
My mum was, it was very different. Lots of long lunches and forgetting to go back to work. They didn't work from client site either, she just went for meetings.
Thanks for sharing PWC2. I know my dad loved his career and now that I'm working, I can appreciate how important that is.
And I think it would be ignorant to assume that consulting is the only career where parents make sacrifices - there are doctors, shift workers, those who work multiple jobs, etc. At least consulting can provide for a very good life.
Yes. M y coworker's mother is a retired senior exec from ACN. That is the only one i know.
Kids get the short end of the stick, for sure. Understandable that the skewed priorities are unpalatable for the next generation. The happiest consultants I know are childless and or single.
Partner here and I know a decent number of partner's kids who are in the business. They just don't advertise it that their parents work for the firm. Maybe I'm kidding myself but my kids understand the trade offs we have made and that I would have gone crazy as a stay at home mom.
Yep, Dad was a partner. I don't have a complex about trying to make him proud or anything.... 🤦🏼♀️
EY1 - preach!
Father, sister, and myself.
S& - really? I can think of a lot worse things you can do in terms of parenting. Most of my senior colleagues have kids and there are plenty of parents on this app - I can't imagine they all think they are making a mistake...
