Contrary to the other comments before mine, I actually agree with the article. Many of the people I see with the #OpenToWork banner post things that kind of have a desperate vibe to it, which to me, takes away their leverage in a potential interview and subsequent negotiation.

I think this would probably vary vastly by industry, company, and individual recruiter or hiring manager.

They quoted a former Amazon recruiter. If you’re looking for a job at a top company like Amazon, I could see sharing you’ve been laid off hurting your chances. But if your goal is just to get a job (which is a very reasonable goal when you’re laid off and have bills due or if you just prioritize work differently in your life and don’t see it as your identity), I could see open to work getting you more potential opportunities. But what do I know 🤷‍♂️

likehelpful

I get this but I hate it.

Amazon doesn’t want to hire you because you’ve been laid off and have leveraged LinkedIn to find a new job. However, they’re ok with someone who is in role, looking to come to them? What says they won’t be doing the exact same thing once at Amazon?

Comes off as some very backward thinking where a recruiter is proud of themselves for being clever and thinking outside the box. It’s anything but imo.

This feels so odd. Seems like a terrible scenario for people who are open to new work.

Really? We believe everything cnbc puts out now? Most of it is garbage.

I have been told that by a coaching company that I am working with. There might be some truth to it.

After I added the #OTN banner, I received an increase in messages from recruiters. Before the banner, I received one message a week. After the banner, I receive two messages a week, not including the recruiters who skip LinkedIn and email or text me directly. I would like to see the data supporting the recruiter's conclusion.

A question from a youngster. Is working at a big big company with slightly low pay better or working at a much smaller company with higher pay better?

In the future, after a few years, let’s say I’m at a small company and want to switch to big big company, will the “small names” hurt my chance to get into the big doors?

I mean big big company is like 10x bigger than the small one if this was a factor. Assume everything else the same, WLB, commute, teams, etc.

Able to post something so absurdly wrong (Google PMs in the comments explaining that she transferred ladders when she switched jobs internally, hence pay change)

Able to become a product manager at Google and STILL not comprehend how misleading the race aggregation stat is “Black women make 58 cents to every $1 a white man makes!” not taking into account job choice and individual opportunity.

on the way to an interview this morning eating a sandwich. I walked past a homeless man who had a stray cat perched on his lap. He asked for a bite of sandwich to feed them both as they hadn’t eaten in days. I gave the whole sandwich over and headed off to the interview. As I got to the interview room there was a large executive chair facing away from me. The chair turned and on top was a mirror. When looking in the mirror I could see the cat. I am the cat. Does anyone else feel that the more content someone puts in their LinkedIn headline, the more full of it they are? I say this as someone with a bunch of stuff lol but at least it’s all at one company and accurate.

I’m talking mostly about two kinds of people. 1. The influencer who is actually unemployed, but lists 25 BS things they do
2. The brand collector, who writes “ex-“ for every former company they worked at and school they went to. Maybe less full of it but still insufferable.
