At my last job, I was a part time post production assistant and i was doing consistently solid work and really wanted to be brought on full time because I couldnt afford to support myself but they wouldnt take the leap with me. My lead editor gave me this advice: sometimes you have to leave a job you like in order to get the job you deserve. If they're telling you you wont get a raise or promoted, believe them.

So what I say is, if you havent been at that position for a while and you really like it and think youll be promoted, get a part time gig or side hustle to supplement. If youve been there a while, and the mistakes youre talking about are pretty minor, it's worth it to take the steps to move on up. No one ever feels ready

Thank you stranger🥺
I do love this job but it doesn’t seem like I’ll be getting promoted in the next 3-4 months like I want (it’ll be year in Jan) . I think what makes matters worse is that I was in a different disciple on the same team making the same amount for over a year instead of just 9 months :/

I think that’s totally normal - assess what the role above you does and I bet, time and time again, you would have know how to handle things

I feel scared. Like if my work has mistakes now (although I am on the more difficult projects), how will it be when I’m expected to be a step higher? Any advice is appreciated💓

1. If you’re not getting promoted every 1-2 years at an agency, either you’re doing something wrong or the company is not financially sound.

2. If money is your biggest concern, your best bet to make more money quickly is to jump to a new company every 2-3 years or so. You will typically yield much bigger gains than you would getting an internal raise or promo. You could even try to do it every year but you’ll get to a point where people may question hiring someone who switches jobs so frequently.

Hey, I was in the exact same boat as you at EssenceMediacom. They christened the merger with a neverending hiring and promo freeze. Don't let the sunken cost keep you. We can't stay at the Associate/Assistant level forever and the wage is frankly unlivable.

I miss my team, but there's better wages at other companies

Promotion every 1-2 years? Whoever has that expectation is a child.
You gunna be a 30 year old CEO at a hold co?
You got what it takes to manage national and global business? Innovation? Global clients? Industry trends? Multiple P&L? Mergers and Acquisitions? Company Moral? All that plus yourself? You gunna write about your depression and hard job on fishbowl?

Promotions every 1-2 years is silly. Learn your trade, earn your trade. Leadership takes experience and experience takes time. Nothing is owed to you.
That’s why they call it a career.

I’m glad I don’t work under you

Employers are not loyal when they need to lay-off. I’ve learnt that the hard way, staying on a sinking ship hoping I would get a promotion for my loyalty.
Think about your career and move one if you don’t see improvement.

Hi all - just joining and looking for some guidance! I am currently in an IT internship position (making pretty solid money considering) and following this summer I will stay on part time during my senior year (discussing a full-time job offer after already). I’m getting my computer science degree, so I would like to do something more technical in the workplace when I graduate. How do I advocate myself for that to my manager without sounding unappreciative of the position I’m in?

During my interview process I clearly stated my salary expectations of 95k-105k. They came back with an offer at 80k. Is it even possible for us to come closer to a better agreement with them being so low? All other aspects of the job are in line with what I'm looking for, so I really want to make this work.

I need advice. I moved into product management under a year ago to an early stage startup. The first few months went well, but the last 5 have been chaotic. It feels like we’re becoming more sales led, there are too many pivots (I expected some) our roadmap is becoming influenced by sales/ceo. Essentially, we’re trying to do much. It’s happening so much I’m starting to lose confidence in the company/strategy. It’s also causing me anxiety…
