For vacation planning, I tend to stack PTO days around holidays that the company is off for. That way I save a few PTO hours. I also try to plan things around weekends as much as possible.
I've done that to some extent, taking a Friday off before a three-day weekend, which makes a mini-vacation more feasible. But I haven't done it that often. I can admire people who maximize PTO days like it's a sport, but I haven't yet taken it to that level.
I don’t do it around holidays very much, but I love a good long weekend and do plan PTO around Fridays and Mondays. A lot of just random times too is great because I’m not in competition with a bunch of others over certain days. Saves me some paid days and I get a good bit of time off with it.

I try to that way is just looks better at the year end when my "PTO days" are less than another's.
I've lost so many PTO hours in the past 6 months due to a cap that this isn't an issue. I did finally take some half days in December. I guess that's my hack: a couple of half days per month. Wednesdays and Fridays work for me.
I like to take half days for a full week and only work mornings. I start extra early and duck out by 10:30-11 before I woulda done anything at home anyways
