Anyone feel uneasy at times when there is a new hire? Like I feel like this individual will come for my role in the near future ?

Put a positive spin on it, they hired an admin and promoted you to paralegal. If the person does well and eventually gets promoted to paralegal, you may get promoted to senior paralegal. You can mentor, teach, train new people and have the mentoring experience to show for yourself. It does not need to be territorial. There can more than one paralegal in an office.

Better watch out … I may be coming for your role lol

What is your role ? What about them makes you feel uneasy. When it’s a new hire I am happy because I am all about team work.

like

If there replacing someone who quit then they’re not your replacement and you have nothing to worry about, if they’re not filling a role that was made empty and got hired out of the blue is when you may have grounds to worry.

Stop feeling so insecure. There is no room for that. I will say that I have been working in law offices for 40 years. DO NOT TRUST ANYONE. That is how you will survive.

Yes, at times, I think it's natural to have those feelings, however you have move past them. Also, if it's to replace somebody who left it shouldn't affect you I get it and it goes to how management moves as well..

Yes

Yes, I also be on edge sometimes when a new person comes in. Sometimes I be thinking the company hired them to replace me 😭

ok so i am not alone in thinking that lol

No.

Why are people so paranoid these days?

I'm lateraling to another firm because frankly I think the management of this one is terrible, but the people (and individual partners) I actually work with are awesome. I've only been here for about 18 months, so I imagine that short time frame will make it extra awkward 😬

Additional Posts in Paralegals

Hi everyone. Is it typical for the attorney to take credit for the work a paralegal does? An example: I gave some ideas about deposition questions and some observations I made (I was asked about giving suggestions) regarding a witness and the attorney mentioned that he’s the one that had these great questions/observations. Zero credit or thank you for the work I did.

I did it! I got an in-house Paralegal position after years of working and being burned out at different law firms. I was going to leave the legal field all together because I was so burned out and depressed, but I decided to give the field one more chance if I was able to go in-house. Prayerfully, this transition will be a good one.

I am a paralegal interested in making the jump from litigation to Worker's Compensation. I don't have recent experience in WC but recall it was a lot of form work. Any Worker's Compensation experts here that can offer an opinion (is it a heavy lift) and run me thru some of your daily activities? I am in New Jersey. Thanks!

I’m currently a bankruptcy paralegal. Not sure I want to stay in bankruptcy forever. I’ve heard it can be really hard to change practice types and break into a new area of law. Anyone have experience or tips/advice on doing so?

Are there any fully remote lawfirms, ie you don't have to live in the state they have offices? I recently left a large lawfirm to go in-house which came with a huge paycut that is not going to be sustainable long term, but needed a remote position to be able to move. I'd like to keep my current job part-time but get back in a lawfirm too.

I’m interviewing with another firm next week. Has anyone made a switch like that before? How did you do it? I work in a small criminal firm now. Interview is with a same size/practice area firm.

How do you know when it is time to move on. I am the only litigation paralegal billing over 2,500 a year consistently. Love the boss I work the most for but that person has grown distant. Staff reviews were supposed to be complete this week and no one has mentioned mine. Underpaid by about $30k per market value. Torn and confused.

Currently a paralegal at a small start up financial services company been there for just a little over a year. I wear “multiple hats” but more recently I’ve done a lot of PM work and some BA work. My position title is changing soon but I’m wondering how helpful that would be for wanting to go into PM work at a tech company. Anyone have any career pivot advice? (Also I’m only 1.5yrs old in my career so I’m definitely still new, and I have previous experience as a project assistant).

So I have my bachelors in criminal justice and I just finished my paralegal certificate course today. My attorney should be making partner this year. With that being said I told her that I would complete my certificate by the summer around the time she would make partner. Should I mention to her Monday that I completed my paralegal certificate in hopes that the raise will be bigger or should I wait until June when she makes partner.thoughts?

Fried Frank reached out to me about an open senior real estate paralegal position they have in NY, and at first I wasn’t looking to move from my current firm, but then we talked salary (a nearly 50% raise) and now I’m willing to listen a little bit more. I started working for a new law firm, much larger than the firm I was working for previously. The main attorney that I work under had noticed some mistakes I was making (I am a NY paralegal who took this position with the understanding that they’d be teaching me NJ and NYC real estate). Anyways, the attorney decided to tell the HR manager about the mistakes I had been making. Rather than HR discussing with me, the manager told my dramatic coworker to tell me..how should I handle this? Very hurt!
