Im trying to get out altogether! And go work at trader Joe's. Or something. So I'm focused on early retirement.
Left private practice in 2015 and got a government job to deal with these nasty loans via public service loan forgiveness. Also got good benefits so I max out my 457b, HSA and Roth every year. I got 5 years left until forgiveness. The numbers may align and I should be ready to retire early. Well, I might work somewhere chill, like a gift shop at a museum but I won't be forced to practice law.... and that's the goal. Ultimately will head down to Mexico, get a cute apartment by the beach for $500/mo.
The practice of law is complete joke.
That’s is awesome! I am sure that I and everyone else is happy for you but living on beach in Mexico isn’t feasible for most people who have families.
I started exploring different areas on Solo practice university. They have video lectures teaching different areas of law- some are more helpful than others. Have I broken into a field based on any of these videos? No. But it gives you a 35k ft look at the practice area and may spark an interest in how to learn more. The service costs some money- but nothing serious I don’t think. May be worth a look.
I went from a practice I love (corporate restructuring) to one I learned (real estate) later on. It really depends on what you want to do. Currently, I’m GC for a company I co-founded, but it depends, again, on what you want. We’re all rather intelligent people, and, given a few months, it isn’t all that hard to learn the ropes in another practice area if you are really interested in said area.
I agree with this. Don’t listen to the naysayers who will discourage you from learning a new area.
I’ve been at two “new model” (no offices, cloud-based) firms since 2005, and at each one, there have been a few — not many! — people who entirely changed their practice areas. One went from litigation to commercial transactions (emphasis on educational institutions) and the other from kind of a grab bag of regulatory practice areas to data privacy with an EU emphasis. In my view, it’s possible to transition, but you need a reasonable plan, a firm that gets your plan and a way to make it worthwhile to the firm as you transition (existing book or acting as service partner for an area with short-term needs). That being said, corporate formation is unlikely to be a good long-term practice area, as it’s pretty superficial and therefore big players like Legal Zoom will always win as they underprice. Same for basic estate planning. Consider privacy law! The laws are all new(ish) in the US, the market is great because companies are scared, and there a ton of lawyers all coming up to speed at the same time.
