I’ve put myself up for L4 promo this cycle. Assuming I get it, what would be the best next steps to optimize for long-term growth/TC?
My understanding is that L5->L6 is extremely painful at Google. It may be easier to leave for a handful of years and gain managerial experience before returning.
L4->L5 is less challenging; however, I’m under the impression I can do this quicker at another company (if I leave after being freshly promo’d) AND get higher TC.

Ow1: truth be told, this is at ow. The project was almost ruined by this manager. The partner knows this full well. The partner and I actually worked very well together and the project was a success without the manager, the manager likely got a terrible review but now the manager is putting the blame of him nearly collapsing project on me
Have tangible evidence for your dispute. Email chains, documents, etc. "there can only be one."
Consultant 1: it's going to impact whether or not I get promoted since my last two reviews already had me at the next level but this one put me back at the top end of current level
I have never heard of this. Esp. Because we now use snapshots.
Should note that the manager is known to have done a terrible job on the project and the process was documented throughout. The project was ultimately successful only because the manager left but he still has input into the review
Depends on your company
Ask your coach about it first
Ow1: do ow people have more chances for appeal than other firms in these types of things?
Looks like it's very tough in some companies. By being very prepared and factual I can generally bring the review to a discussion rather than a final judgment. I emphasize this has tonne done with a lot of tact, on certain points, with certain people. If it feels like you're whining and/or you're subjective, you'll probably get roasted
Also to add. The partner was extremely pleased with my performance, even telling staffing that. Hilariously, the manager was complimentary and appreciative of my work as well until he likely received a terrible review and now is blaming a whole bunch of his own mistakes on me.
^isn't that the D way though? Blame the person below you?
Doesn't matter in the long term. I wouldn't make a big stink about it if your partner knows
Gotta roll with the punches. I got burned once by a jerk director and didn't get promo to manager. Ended up getting it the next year. Point is it doesn't really matter. Don't sweat stuff that's outside of your control
