I'm in Denver. I started my career here but I have friends who moved from NY Biglaw to here and they have done well. People say Denver is a small legal community, and it really is. Don't burn any bridges during your interviews.
I live in Denver and I love it. We need more black and brown lawyers here.
I live in Denver, and it is "meh" at best. If you love the outdoors stuff, you'll enjoy it. It is just so unbelievably white. We need more POC though so yea, come on over 😂
I live in Denver and love it, but it’s definitely a very white space and there’s a lot of racism as a result + law firms justify their unwillingness to hire/retain black and brown people by telling themselves there aren’t many of us. Be very intentional about where you end up, if your black. Colorism is a thing here, so the darker your skin, the more pronounced the racism will be.
Even the firms that do better at hiring POC can't keep them. At the end of the day, no amount of marketing can fix racist partners.
I would recommend you trying to grab a coffee with other attorneys in Denver and seeing how they like it and what their expectations are.
Their culture is very different from NY, so get to know it and try to integrate the best you can. I went from Orange County to SF and it was a world of difference and that's just in the same state.
Don't pull a Megan Markle and think you're going to change an office because you're from a big city.
I have no Meghan Markle aspirations 😂
Just trying to find a good place to raise a family, where I can do interesting work, have better access to the mountains and spend a little less on rent!
I grew up in Denver (and lived in diverse areas, went to diverse schools). Now I live in Boston and am realizing how much I took it for granted. I’m in law school so can’t say anything about the market/re recruiters there. However, I saw you mention something about raising children and I do think it’s a great place for that and is possible to ensure they go to schools/activities where they will have community. Obvi every place has its racist bunch(es). In my experience the people who are racist are much more blatant about it (which imo makes it easier to have people take those concerns seriously and address them or to simply avoid those people/areas). Overall, growing up in Denver I really enjoyed it and, if I wanted children, I do think I would consider raising them there
Stay in Denver.
