What m1 said...I feel like being in projct management means that you end up being on outside of things and kind of just...keeping things chugging along. But when you move to product, you're going to be involving in a lot of different things, some technical and some not
Thank you A1. This was very helpful. I’ll look into B2B roles and keep an eye out on product roles within.
It is a shift in mindset. Project management doesn’t care necessarily about the outcome - just that the project was on-time and on-budget. Product is about ensuring you’re building the right thing/feature for the customer. It’s about learning and adapting. Happy to talk you through if you like: chris@christophersheridan.com
Angels on earth! Thank you!!
Biggest hurdle is having to learn something vs being an admin
Hey! Mine was a joke and I said I felt bad lol. You seem smart and like you’re a go getter, Product roles (generally) aren’t hard and you’ll do great
“Building TO spec” versus “building THE spec”
Not every piece of customer feedback is going to be relevant for every customer. Product has to find the common denominators.
I like this, SPM1. I better grab my notebook in the morning for all these punch lines you guys are dropping. Very memorable and succinct. Thanks!
Everyone finds it difficult. No one really understands what the differences are.
You know what, I’ve heard that a lot. Program/Project/Product just seem like a construct of time and industry shifts. Sometimes, I understand the differences despite the blur. Other times like now, I’m feeling lost. Probably because of the angst of job searching. Maybe I should watch YouTube videos to get some clarity.
Following! Very interesting question, thanks for asking!
Yay!!
It depends on what type of PM-ing you do. I was a PM but came from the tech side and I also knew about the business, a lot. That was the key. Then transitioning to Product was easy.
One thing though. In my case it is tech products in a specific industry. Other product management roles require more knowledge of market research and cash flow projections... That is a different story. I would suggest going the MBA route for that some marketing training.
Now, there are places where a PM merely makes a Gantt chart, runs stand-ups and other meetings, updates Jira stories, track progress, and prepares reports. No tech or business knowledge to apply. In those cases... as Manager 1 crudely put it, that PM may need to learn something
Thanks for sharing how you made the switch. I have that business side too so if I position myself properly, that can be my in. The marketing bit really piqued my interest! I never thought I’d see myself as the “marketing type” but now I’m seeing my perfect product role as one that incorporates knowledge of market trends, user behavior, etc. and I know UX/UI too so working with design teams and researchers to gather and make sense of that info would be a dream. I looked into Product Marketing Manager roles but idk anyone that has really done this to know what their day-to-day is like. I think your comment is steering me in that direction to explore it more. Thank ya!
