I'm doing it now! It's a bit painful to lug a bunch of luggage around and makes things like dating tough, but it's nice to save money and too hard to justify getting a place when I haven't yet been staffed on the same continent I'm based in
I did it about three years ago when I was on a long term travel project. I packed my stuff up in storage and made my base for all my clothes my parents' house. Saved a lot of money but the peace of mind of having your own spot, even if just for the weekends was PRICELESS for me.
I'd get roommates and take the cheap/crappy room. It is so nice to have a place to yourself that's constant.
I've had a shared room in an apartment with friends (not random roomies) and it was great. Paid very little for a place to keep stuff and sleep about 5 nights per month... and got to hang out with friends
Been with the firm for four and a half years... Have never rented an apartment....
Haven't paid rent in almost two years! Was staffed overseas forever and got sick of paying what was essentially crazy expensive storage for my stuff. Agree it makes dating tough...But so does our job.
@anyone not having a home: what address do you put down for your company records? I assume they must send you mail of some sort at some point.
I did it for about 6 months. I was already doing a lot of alt travel anyway. Stored my stuff at a friend's place and crashed at their place when I was back. It works if you have parents or close friends in your home base.
^and what if you're totally alone in your base city? Anyone think of a workaround for putting down your "address" on your company profile?
I put my office address.
I use my office address too. And I moved to a different state and am doing fine. Dating is hard though....
@D3: are you commercial S&O? How do you do it with clothes for work, weekend, workout, etc?
@LEK- I keep stuff at my parents' and have a big suitcase that I leave with the hotel on Thursday. Do laundry at hotel and dry cleaning in client city
@D3: Got it! Thanks a ton. I'm curious as well about ACN1's question. What do you put for your home and / or physical address? I imagine a PO Box would be too restrictive.
Thanks, @OW1. Appreciate everyone's responses. Feel free to continue to chime in if you've done this and liked / disliked it.
Devil's advocate here, so when you do your taxes, do you report the address that you actually live at or ACN address as well?
Office address. Although I want to switch to a Texas address lol taxes and such
