I think that’s fine! You heard more about the role and it’s responsibilities during the interview so makes sense to esp frame it that way
I agree you can always ask for more. That said, I know from experience that the salary candidates give during screening is a factor in advancing to the interview stage, otherwise this is a waste of everyone’s time. It’s been happening a lot lately where I interview a candidate whose salary ask jumps by 20-30k when we get to offer stage. I had one candidate who asked for 140k after telling recruiting they were looking for 85. I personally would pay more if I could, but we have budgets…

You have a good plan. I recently accepted a manager position (L-MCOL) at EY FSO in your new price range so you are correct. But I didn’t start off low (accepted $10k under asking but negotiated a signing bonus). Worst case, you now have more info for the next interview opportunity with other firms.
