Same.. and I feel I don't wanna go completely design side either because then I guess we just end up making things look pretty. I want a hybrid.
The visual standards for composition and typography for designers are MUCH higher than they are for art directors. So, you’ve got to ask yourself if you’ve got that level of product. If you do, then try it out. It’s not like a stint at a design shop would stop you from being hired at an agency.
Be prepared to answer why you’re interested in coming to a design shop. And “dissatisfied with advertising” isn’t going to be an answer the principal of a design firm is looking for. They are not also-rans or second-bests to agencies and they’re often pretty sensitive about it.
Try a smaller shop. I feel like the balance between concepting and hands on design is more prominent when you have a smaller team.
Don’t focus on where you work but what you work on. Find clients whose look and lifestyle fit yours. I was miserable working on a coffee maker, but stoked to be working on a whiskey brand. Easier said than done I know. But your accounts are more important than your agency I say. I’d be happier at a shitty agency working on a brand I love over work at the best agency on shampoo. I hate washing my hair. Leave that shit for the nerds.
I’m a designer by trade and love the craft. I thought i could meld the two by choosing to be an AD, but it’s just proving to be not enough design for me. I’m even on a beautiful brand and love the aesthetic of it - which i know is pretty rare. I’m just becoming mentally drained and losing my drive because I feel mentally checked out. I’m not underdelivering by any means, but being generally unhappy at a job really wears you down and doesn’t make you feel that great. Guess I just gotta get out!
I came into advertising because I never felt I was good enough to be a designer. Ad world has changed my mind. I'm actually making the switch to UX designover the next couple years! All the though and concepting of AD with the design execution in UI. I'm very excited for this transition and it feels much more filling than what my future would look like staying in Ad world.
@OP, I totally get you. As a former art director in advertising, the title/role of an art director is total bullshit. Most ECDs and CCOs are copywriters by trade. That's because CWs write the concepts down, they refine ideas through the written language. Most Art Directors just contribute obscure reference of artists, designers and film makers and pass it along as "their visual treatment" to a campaign. As an art director my bullshit was next level and I was tired of bullshitting. I left advertising and pursued a career as a motion designer. Now, I get to experiment with motion, color and typography, and once in a while I'll help an art director polish their bullshit.
Go be a designer. There are plenty of opportunities out there. I hear sagmeister and Walsh is looking. Leave the AD roles for AD’s
It’s pretty hard to be happy all the time at work. I find it’s phases of highs and lows. That’s why I opened my own stationery Etsy shop on the side. No matter how tedious work gets, I always have something I’m passionate about to work on
I’m heading that way, advertising was never the right choice and I knew it, I just wanted the money.
@freelance1 Yes! Totally on the same page. And @AD 5, that’s kind of where my head is at too. I’m realizing money is not worth it if you hate your job! But I’m also scared because I don’t want to take a pay cut anywhere I go as a designer. Especially if I go to a smaller shop. I’m not sure how those kinds of places pay. I would love to just quit altogether and go freelance, but that’s also scary!
I left agency life and am working for a startup that’s brand I feel so passionately about, it’s a completely different world. No handcuffs, no limitations and the excitement of how fast it’s growing. If anything, moving to a “design” role has made me creative director and now people actually see my work. Couldn’t be happier with my decision.
See I hate freelance cause of the inconsistency... but I would love to be doing more work I could be excited for
I find it tough finding my place - many shops large and small don’t seem to understand the tech well enough or trust the designers enough to make killer work - instead its all a pile of meh and sighs
@OP, did you decide to make the switch yet? I wouldn’t recommend design shops bc they are small and rarely hiring, as I found out. Look for startups and brands you feel passionately for and try and work in-house. It’s a completely different experience.
@AD6, I haven’t made the switch yet. But yea, that’s what I’m worried about. No design shops are everrr hiring. And if they do I feel like it’s people they already know. Hard. But I might just try to switch to a designer role at an agency and see if that’s any better!
