I got a remote L6 SWE offer at Google but the RSUs are too low for that level ($625k over 4 years), could not negotiate it higher. Would not say it’s typical, but definitely if you’re taking a paycut/step down in firm/bringing great experience they don’t have to help build out a practice, it’s worth asking for.
I got $15k as a 6th year going between peerish biglaw firms but it was exceptional circumstances, I was going as part of a team.
Hijacking to ask if Cravath scale Plaintiff’s side boutiques (full of prior big law attorneys) are more or less likely to pay signing bonuses?

Yes but you have to tell us more. Year. Base. Market. Practice area.

On those facts we would probably pay $10k signing bonus if you have a strong resume.
I’ve had friends get as low as 2k and as high as 35k.
I negotiated a $30k clerkship bonus with two years of clerk experience. Firm is on Cravath scale. Different level of experience of course.

Yes. I responded to a similar question in a different bowl. Below are some points that might give you leverage and that you would want to mention in discussions. The amount depends on the point you are using for leverage.
1) You are leaving your 2020 fiscal year bonus on the table because they don’t pay them out until later this year and you’re starting with the new firm before then. For example, some big firms do not pay bonuses until March. The amount of the signing bonus could be the amount of the bonus you're leaving behind.
2) You are taking a pay cut by going to the new firm. The amount of the signing bonus could be the difference in salary.
3) You have a competing offer that’s offering you a higher salary. The amount of the signing bonus could be the difference in salary.
4) You gave notice and your current firm offered you money to stay. This rarely happens but when it does, it can absolutely be used as leverage. The amount of the signing bonus could be the amount your firm offered you to stay.
Always ask if you are in one of the above situations!
