For a new mom (baby under 1 year old) would you advise against interviewing and trying to lateral to a big law firm that can consistently give me 2200 billables and a market bonus ? I want the big law pay, but I am afraid of change and the unknown. I’m currently at a amlaw200 firm, most I ever billed was 1950.

2200 hours is too much time for a parent to be away from their children (mom or dad), especially a baby.

That would be a non-starter for me unless I had zero other options and another default parent/caregiver available 24/7 (dad, grandparent, not an employee).

I agree with A1. 2200 is cramming a whole additional month of work into a calendar year. Unless you have family support, you end up spending the entire pay raise on childcare, uber eats, extra housekeepers and other services that enable you to focus your time on billables.

If you have never billed more than 1950 before having a child, you’re not going to now. Sorry! Keep the work life balance

I’m a mom of a 20-month old toddler, and having my second next month. I am at an 1850 minimum billable, amlaw 200 firm, and it’s taking everything for me to make my minimum and be present for my family. When you account for sleep regressions, unplanned sickness, the possibility of another child in the mix… plus the fun stuff- taking the kiddo to activities and outings as they get older, doing things for you, etc, there just isn’t enough hours in the day for extra billables. I would not increase my billing requirement, if it was me…. From a fellow mom in the trenches!

My husband is on a 50% schedule and I’m on a 75% schedule. More men should be part time when they have kids. Kids need their dads.

I have a 16 month old and an 1800 hour requirement. My husband is in big law so I am the primary caregiver (and we have a nanny for 10 hours a day). Even though I used to be able to hit 1800 for multiple years, I can’t get anywhere close now. Between regular doctor appointments, constant meal planning and grocery shopping, being there for emotional needs, sleep regressions, teething, instructing the nanny, buying new things to keep up with milestones - it’s literally impossible and I’m drowning. Can’t even imagine 2200 - it sounds like hell to try to reach and impossible to get there.

I was at a 2200 billable firm when I first had kids. Went to a couple of other places when my first was between 1-2, and ended up back at the 2200 firm. While theoretically it's possible, it's completely miserable. From my experience, you always feel like you're falling short somewhere, and when you try to be perfect on both ends you end up completely burnt out. I agree with the others that 2200 is just too many hours for a parent with a small child (really anyone!) I would say the pay increase is not worth what you'll be dealing with trying to hit those hours with a small child.

From one mom at biglaw to another. DO NOT DO IT. At most interview and if you get the job then asked for reduced hours like 75%. If they say no do not go it’s impossible

Do you have to bill 2200 or is it an option to get a higher bonus? I just had my second and am on track for 2200 this year (first year billing this much) because I happen to get a bunch of really good opportunities this year. I do this by working 6am to 5pm so I can still do bedtimes. My husband is a stay at home dad so my only job is work and bonding. We make it work and for me the money is worth it.

2200 consistently is high, but depends on your practice area. If you’re not expected to do much non billable work, it’s doable. And if you’re in a practice where you can bill on large projects or are otherwise unrestricted then doable as well.
