The only advice I have is to train your clients. Train them on what to expect, how best to communicate with you, and timeframes for responses on urgent and non-urgent matters. It takes a while, but especially with long-term engagements and/or repeat clients, it can be invaluable.
I have this conversation with associates all the time. Why isn’t the answer to choose an acceptable work life balance, and see how things go?
This job, like everything in life, changes over time; so my experience will not have been like yours. However, there’s no reason you have to do this for a living. If the balance that you want isn’t achievable, then find other things to do.
As an associate, my attitude was always that I would be myself. If I did not fit in my firm or in this industry, I wanted to know that sooner than later.
