Back in September I received an email informing me I had only 1 day of sick time (unplanned absence) left and requesting time beyond that would result in termination.

I overheard the Senior Director of my org talking about it, saying “There’s NO WAY she’s gonna make it. She still has more than 3 months!”

Well, joke’s on you!! I’m still hereee!! I used no time in Oct/Nov and took 2 half days this month 👌🏻

I can’t wait til she gets back from leave and sees me.

Heyyyy bestie!!! 😅

Congrats, but what if you got the flu or Covid - would your overlords expect you to come in and infect everyone at your company?

like

What do you mean “I’ve only been there a year and I used up all my sick time?” lmao we get 5 sick days a year and they encourage us to use it, as it’s a part of our benefits/comp.

I used a few in the beginning of the year when I had a bad virus and 2 at other times. That’s not unreasonable by any means.

Well first of all, I am sorry you had to overhear that. But good for you for proving them wrong. You will have to report back on her face when she walks in and sees you.

like

Why did you take so many sick days that it even became a thing?

like

@PO1, only 5 sick days per year, that doesn't seem very much to last for the entire year. But I have heard of places that only offer 5 sick days plus only 1-2 weeks of Vacation time for employees that have been with the company for 1-2 years or less, then it grows from there depending how long you stay with the company.

How much vacation time you you receive each year, and does any of this time role over from one year to the next?

With my company everyone starts off with 3 weeks (120 hours) of PTO (sick and vacation combined) and it goes up every couple years. And any unused time roles over to the next year. We do have a max of how much time we can carry at a time (2 times whatever the individual employee accrued PTO time)

It seems like that comment is based on them trying to use a technicality to lay you off? So, enjoy the first day, but maybe the knives are out all year for you?

Advisor, I think you're referring to Short-Term Disability insurance, because the FMLA does not require "the doctor's records." The Physician Certification form requires only a description of how long the patient will need, whether they'll need continuing care such as regular checks, how much time the patient will need to be out, whether it can be intermittent or continuous leave. I generally never see any full diagnosis in the physician's certification.

STD insurance, on the other hand, is not easy to get approved for -- mostly because insurance companies do everything they can to deny claims. They will require extensive records from the doctor, a full diagnosis and probably treatment plan. That's why we implore the employees to have their doctor fax/whatever their paperwork directly to the insurance company and not to HR. I don't want to see it, and I shouldn't see it.

However, one time the employee brought the doctor's stuff directly to me rather than have them send it to Aetna, and I was able to see his many debilitating diagnoses, AND that his doctor had literally written at the top of the form, in all caps, "not return to work until cleared by me" or something similar, but making very clear that the poor guy was not able to work, period, for some extended period. Aetna was denying his claim bey9ond two weeks. My broker and I got on the phone with the Aetna people, and they were saying he wasn't really that sick. I said that, since I saw the paperwork, I knew that he was seriously ill and that the diagnoses were very serious. The Aetna claims adjuster said to me, "Well, sometimes those big words can be confusing to an untrained mind." I asked her if she was calling me stupid (I majored in Biology, and I read a LOT about medical things, as they're an avid interest of mine). We dropped Aetna as soon as we could, and our broker made sure that woman was spoken to.

Congrats! I am tired of these companies acting like we are just there to make money for them and do not have any needs with regards to family, sickness or even heaven forbid....an actual vacation. for my FMLA I have to take 8 hours UNPAID to have an intermittent absence....EVEN IF I HAVE PTO AVAILABLE...they TRY to for us to give them a way to sack us, even if you have cancer......
