Where I live (Loundoun County, VA) based on the public schools' survey people is divided. Half voted for the hybrid model (kids two days attending school and three days online per week), and half elected full online classes. Not that this is representative for the nation, just an example.
Honestly I don’t know what I want. In an ideal world, kids would go back to school but it doesn’t feel like the school district has plans with enough precautions in place and I’m not even sure there are enough precautions that can be taken given the attitudes of some Americans around wearing masks, etc.
So the higher income bracket who either have one stay at home parent or already have a nanny are behind the we shouldnt be forced to send back our kids to school consensus while the young professionals with toddlers are asking for daycares/montessori to reopen. At least, that is what I have seen. I agree having a safe school environment is needed but billing is required.

I would love for my kids to have a safe place to go. Schools do not seem safe right now and will just increase the spread of this virus even further.
All leadership is local, the President isn't going to tell your local school district what to do. Our college freshman is off to campus in 7 weeks, our HS junior will be half time in the building, half time on line.
The federal government does provide some funding to public schools but as I recall it’s less than 10 percent. But yeah it doesn’t seem like the federal dept of Ed. is going to be telling people what to do.
I live in a suburb of Dallas and they did a poll last month and 70% of parents wanted in-person learning. However today they announced they will start the year with virtual learning ☹️
My twins learned very little March-May and were a little behind to begin with so this will only put them further behind.
The push for virtual learning is going to have disastrous consequences

Also curious: People demanding "safe" re-opening (parents and teachers alike) - what does "safe" mean to you?

I feel like the plan i outlines is really only available in private schools or districts with lots of cash. The average school can’t pull this off.
