How much do you present the unpopular opinion at work (or in life) and does it help you or harm you?

I just follow the Thanksgiving rule. Generally don't talk politics, religion, etc unless you know ahead that you're in agreement.

Anything less societally controversial is fair game for me though. For example, if senior management wants to do something iffy by customers, or if someone talks about their "friends" to me in an extra negative light. I'll call people out by asking why they think something is good/ok to do. Once I have enough info to not be playing mind-reader, it can become a conversation so I can get a better read on how they think.

Has helped me almost every time. Establishes me as principled but communicable in folks' eyes, while providing myself with info on them. Helps filter who you want to work with on what, how to talk to them, who to make actual friends with and who not to, etc.

In life- I usually just state my opinion and explain why I feel a certain way. I do acknowledge (to myself) that my opinion is controversial and try to understand where the other party is coming from. I’m always open and willing to learning more about a topic which is key to having a good conversation.

At work, i just try to avoid controversial conversations. No telling how people will handle differing opinions about sex, drugs, politics, or religion. I’ve never had a problem with HR and want to keep it that way.

My coworker, who was my friend for a long time, has been lying to me, throwing me under the bus, and taking credit for my work and ideas. I have done more and worked harder than him but he was promoted. He failed a new client big time and I was asked to step in and save the relationship which I did in a big way. Why do I have to work so hard every day while he gets away with scraping by and plagiarizing? How do you deal with a coworker like that?

So I have family situation I've been dealing with and yesterday at a company function outside the office, my supervisor brought it up in front of a bunch of people. First of all highly inappropriate, but also it's nobody's business. She's made comments before outside of work about how her boss is gay, blah blah blah. I'm just at a loss. Should I report it to HR? And if I do, how do I do it without it being known that it came from me??

Worked with an agent on my first deal, great. Second deal now and I’m getting my license myself. I’d like to use her as a backboard for ideas and don’t mind giving her a “finders fee” or something but would like to capture the commissions myself. What would be the normal way to have this convo?

Has it ever happened to you that you meet someone and they say they want a “LTR” however they don’t even put the effort to say hi or ask you things?

This is twice now in back to back weeks my boss has asked me where the disconnect was in our communications because I didn’t deliver on what “was asked”, even though I know damn well what was asked and what was done were the same thing. I’m not sure if he’s changing the meaning or isn’t communicating what he’s envisioning or what but it’s embarrassing to be called out like that, and to have people think you’re the dumb 23 year old.

So I work for a small company as a SEM/Director… which in my world just means I am really Lead Developer, Part BA and part product owner as well as reviewing the devs. I came up in this company starting at about SE3 of 5 so the position is just kind of what I made it. I don’t want to waste time (colleagues mentioned it doesn’t get much better from here). Do I embrace the suck or look for other opportunities?
