Easiest to get a job here when you are living here. The onus will be on YOU. Offer coffee meetups with people who work at companies you see yourself at, in a role where you see yourself eventually. (Don't go and get coffee with a junior.) Use it as a mentoring experience that could lead to a job. Don't outright say "can you get me a job."
Current location is (of course) Midwest.
LinkedIn can be very useful. Go to a company you want to work at and look at employees and how you're connected to them to find someone you know you might be willing to make an introduction. Ask to jump on a call (I would say an in person coffee meet up but you're not in NY) to pick their brain about their role and company. Get to talking and they'll often offer to submit your resume internally
And keep applying "straight through websites and listings"...which is exactly how I've gotten all my jobs despite doing a bunch of other things..
Drive to the city. Tell them you’re in town and would love to come check out the agency. They’ll make time if your book is good.
Write directly to the hiring manager. Link into them, but write to their company email. Not that hard, really.
If you can get to the city great. Set up informational ahead of time. Buy some coffees. Otherwise the LinkedIn advice is great. Find friends of friends. Find alums of the same school etc and talk to people who aren't juniors - you'll be surprised how many people remember being in your shoes and will be willing to help. But make it worth their while. Come with questions. Be hungry. Do your research
Networking is number one. Join Meetup (app), go to different events around the city, keep your LinkedIn up to date and connect with HR/recruiters, get knowledgeable about what's going on in the city in your role, etc. Do you have a website / portfolio?
What 72&S said! Go to events, network, engage with people on Twitter, create a portfolio website. Be excited, put in the work and help them want to help you. If you can't just jump, start online then take some long weekends to NYC to meet people (schedule ahead of time). Move and the job will come faster.
LinkedIn. I got my first agency job without connections through LinkedIn. Just make sure the resume ticks off the right boxes and I'm pretty sure you'll get a response.
Thanks for all the help! I've gained more career insight from Fishbowl than I have from any internship. And none of you even ask me to pick up your dry cleaning.
I moved here from the Midwest after college but am one of the oddities that landed a job first. But, I was reached out to by someone from my hometown. So, I'd try playing that angle if you can. Anyone from your hometown or college already make it out here? Maybe try reaching out to them first. Otherwise, I highly recommend booking a one way ticket and diving in.
