Transferring to where you need them. For domestic Y (economy) redemptions, a distance-based chart (like BA’s) is probably best. Unless you’re trying to do trans cons. I generally use them for premium cabins on long hauls, but you can get great value on some short haul Y redemptions in monopoly markets. Using miles for Sydney to Lord Howe Island (9,000 BA miles, 16,000 Qantas miles, or 20,000 AA miles) was a great value compared to AU$1600 for a round trip Y ticket, for example (and that example also illustrates the different number of miles required for the same award by different oneworld carriers)
Also, I’d keep the points in MR until you’re ready to redeem to have option value (e.g., when you’re ready to redeem, there could be availability with Star Alliance carriers but none on SkyTeam or oneworld carriers, so keeping the points in MR will let you transfer to whatever makes the most sense). What are you trying to redeem for?
Ugh those redemptions give me nightmares considering the value you’re giving up with overseas business travel. Your best bet is to open an AMEX everyday card with no fee and link the accounts. That way you don’t have to transfer and the points won’t be cancelled.
I have used Flying Blue quite a bit for business rewards to Europe. If you want biz flights to Europe then do flying blue. If you want Asia or South America than probably better to consider Singapore or Aeroplan
None of the above. Look at BA and some of the other non-US options. You can still redeem them on US carriers
Would BA or other non-US options have better redemption value?
Educate me pls..
Generally better than DL and the 3:1 SPG conversion, but it all depends on what routes you’re trying to use miles. Delta’s award chart is pretty horrible and isn’t even published anymore. BA has a distance-based award chart. Can be better (awards start at 4,500 miles each way), but can cost more in premium cabins (though less so now that US carriers have increased the points required for many premium cabin redemptions).
Ending my consulting career.. so need to close the Corp amex. So need move and park the points someplace for now..
In most likelihood, would want to use these for domestic travel in economy class or hotels
@p1- if I do that.. what future redemption value/offer should I hold out for?
M1 miles game is strong
Thanks!
I will have to check BA.
Does BA miles let you redeem for US domestic flights?
ANA is actually very very good for availability and is prob one of the cheapest in terms of miles. Big issue is - has to be a round trip
Didnt even know about this reward program with amex corporate... just found out it’s $90/year though
OP, you're supposed to be able to book AA flights but 95% of the time their website won't show availability on AA due to an ongoing bug that it seems like they'll never fix.
Makes it a huge pain to redeem BA miles...
