Wait are there shops that DO compensate you for late nights?
I’ve worked in advertising for close to 30 years and have never gotten compensated for late nights or weekends. Worked at many different agencies and holding companies, too.
😲 the PIP part sounds off, but the rest is accurate; our leadership sucks regarding people management and promotions.
Why would they want to promote you and have to pay more money
Because it’s actually cheaper to give a capped merit raise to an employee who asks for one than to risk losing them and having to pay the actual market price for their replacement who is going to have to be onboarded as well.
That’s not even getting into title raises (which is a little more complicated since it depends on client scopes) that often enables the agency to actually charge even more for billable hours than before.
Since when do salaried employees get compensation for late nights? The no promotion seems sus too.
OP is a senior art director which would put them above the threshold. In NYC it’s 60/65k.
1. Salaried don’t get compensated for late nights.
2. Who has the expectation of being promoted in the first year? There’s a process to promotion planning that is functional— you have to be submitted as a candidate and approved, that’s not likely to happen until the year mark and be executed 6-12 months later.
3. Promotions happen when you are already doing the job at that next level. Perform and you will get that recommendation; you can help by providing examples to your manager showing your accomplishments and how you are delivering on goals.
PS — if you haven’t written out goals with your manager, do so immediately
Well for that argument I have been sitting on the same title for 5 years, doing the role above me for 2 while doing my own, had only one raise after year two after threatening to leave (didn’t want to have to do that)… my manager changed every year, and I am tossed at the difficult/unique/new accounts, including cross-network, to help wrangle them as I’ve been tagged as someone good at that, and then my previous goals are obsolete (even though I outpace them) and have to re-engage with a new manager every cycle. Just missed the current cycle for anything apparently, and coming up on my third year without the slightest bump. however been “identified as a leader” and have driven organic growth on my current account negotiating a 35% sow increase while working severely understaffed on a 18% fee to Account management ratio and haven’t taken a day off to keep the ship afloat.
The network controls the caps. The structure doesn’t account for transitions beyond your control, even if you succeed in spite of them. The process is broken.
I quit freelancing at that place because I ended up doing all the work after they laid off several rounds of full time people, showing a complete disregard for work-life boundaries.
Sheeeeesh which office? Or the whole network
Worked there for way too long. Cab rides and dinners don’t make up for all the pointless late nights routing BS jobs.
Some serious Stockholm syndrome going on there.
Wait we are meant to be getting rides and meals for late nights?!
I worked there for almost 5 years. They would rarely give raises, unless I asked multiple times. It was like pulling teeth. It was dehumanizing as I was working beyond the level I was hired for. This was a trend I saw with a lot of the younger creatives as well. Finally got promoted after 3 years. I had to ask for it multiple times after it went through. Although I miss the work, and miss a lot of the people, the pay was much much less than my current agency, so had to get out.
A lot of firms have an up or our model.
Not many agencies though. Agencies need lots of cheap mediocrity.
