Can I please get some advice on how to break into a corp strategy or BD&L role fresh out of PhD? I'm wondering if I should focus on teaching myself the skills of the job (financial modeling, more advanced data analysis, etc.) or focus on gaining more relevant internship experience, or both.

I've done some part-time internships in tech transfer and student-led life science consulting. The original plan was to join life science consulting, but recruitment seems virtually non-existent this year.

I think your options are equity research or consulting.
It could also be possible to join a smaller company as a scientist and try to get some exposure to BD by acting as a technical SME, and try to leverage that to transition.

Agreed that these are the paths. I did PhD to 3 years LS consulting to BD role

It'll be incredibly hard to get any Corp Strat. or BD job straight out of grad school. 2-3 years in consulting or ER is the usual feeder

like

Pure corp strategy from PhD is tough without consulting. I have seen PhD -> early commercial strategy and PhD -> R&D strategy, but both are extremely rare.

If you cannot recruit for life science consulting I would look for bench scientist roles to hold you over and recruit to consulting as an experienced hire

Would it be difficult to get a job in IA if most of my experience has been auditing private non-404 asset mgmt funds? I really enjoy process walkthroughs when I have them though. Also, does title matter that much in IA? I’m a manager now, but based on job descriptions it looks like I might have to go for a senior auditor role because audit manager roles generally call for 8+ years from what I’m seeing. Can title be negotiated?

I work with a classroom of Middle School ED students. One student, who I worked with the year before, has changed alot over the year. Last year (pre COVID), she had a good head on her shoulders and I thought I had good rapor with her. But over that period of isolation, she tried to commit suicide.

All year, she was much more withdrawn and ALWAYS on her phone! At the end of the I was 'beat up by her - she really knocked my glasses off.

How should I approach her in the upcoming year?
