He will be fine. Don’t worry too much
My kid didn’t start talking till 3 and now he won’t stop (6). Doing fine in school etc. Theyre all on different paces.
Get advice as per other comments for peace of mind though
My kiddo is a little younger than yours and in a similar boat.
What we did was take him to a speech therapist to do an evaluation and began taking him twice a week to work with the therapist on his development areas.
The therapist should also give you recommendations after the evaluation to see other practitioners and share what else you can do at home.
Does he have older siblings? They’re always slower to talk because mom & dad know what they want, and older brothers / sisters talk for them. They’re usually ahead physically.
Nothing wrong with grabbing a state OT though - NY has a great assessment / program
Yeah I wouldn’t worry. Our three year old speaks well. But I’d say more than half the other kids in his daycare class sound to be in the same place as yours. I’d probably just stick to whatever your pediatrician is telling you and don’t stress about it.
Check the CDC milestones. 2.5yr old is like 50ish words and two words together sometimes. Is your kid doing that? If so they are somewhere on the normal bell curve and it’s really a judgement call if you want to seek intervention. If not, def time to talk to a speech therapist.
My daughter (4 yrs old) needs a little work on her speech. Whenever we ask doctor they always say go to specialist. My sister in-law, who focused on speech therapy for young children said no need for it.
It’s a racket. Your kid will be fine.
So much this… for us it was with PT though. We kept being told to take my daughter to PT yet they kept testing her and saying she was 40-50th percentile tile on her motor skills. And she kept staying there. We finally said screw it. She is literally average for her age. That’s not bad (or good). She is fine. It was nuts and caused us so much stress. She also has had zero dropoff since we stopped going (we did do another assessment just to check ourselves).
You should get an assessment with a speech pathologist. My son was a late talker and the speech pathology work really helped
My oldest daughter was slow to speak too (once she started talking, we couldn't get her to stop). 33-years later she's graduated college, working, happily married, and is due to give birth to our first grandchild in August. It will all work out!
Thanks all - helpful perspective. My older son (5), was pretty early in speech development and other areas, so he was our only datapoint.
You should definitely get an assessment ASAP. My son was behind at 2, and was diagnosed with Autism. We started ABA therapy immediately (40 hours per week). He’s now 3 and still not talking, but making progress. Early intervention is critical as brain develops most between 2 and 5.
