Lots of DD’s
BA1-
1. learn a lot about the sector, sub sector, competitive landscape, market forces and trends etc. in a very short period of time due to the extreme time crunch nature of DDs.
2. Clients generally tend to be super sharp as they are either PE / banks / M&A arm of the company.
3. For some, It's exciting to work on analysis that can lead to acquisitions and make the news on WSJ etc.
I did a ton of DDs earlier in my career and learnt tremendously from them. Loved the adrenaline rush that came with it.
Nowadays, I try to stay away as a strive for a better work life balance i.e. Less than 70 hours a week.
How could the “average” day ever hit 20, aint nobody working continuously off 2 hours of sleep.
Yea you’re gonna be on that DD grind. Minimal travel as you don’t travel on DDs which I actually find to be a positive. I hear they are heavy on the life sciences side too
S1.. what mind of hours were you working when in a DD project?
M1- most DDs are very time sensitive. You can expect to put in 16-20 hours / day on weekdays, and 12-16 hours / day on the weekend. Most DDs are 1-3 weeks long and therefore work inevitably spills over to the weekend as well.
That’s a great response and perspective, thanks S&1. Hope you’re getting some wlb atm
Wow S&1 that sounds awful. I rarely see people going over 70 hrs/week here while double staffed on DDs, and I think the median is somewhere from 60-70
P1 - the approximate numbers I gave are for financial / commercial DDs vs. technological DDs.
It's also for DDs that are <10 days long (including weekends). DDs that last 3 weeks or longer will average 70 hour weeks because at that duration it's almost like any other strategy project.
The shorter DDs tend to come in from PE firms and it takes an intense amount of effort to match up to their expectations (and caliber).
I have two friends who were. Both developed help problems because of it
I heard there’s zero travel - kinda deterred me from applying but I will regardless
Forgot to add that double staffing on 2 DDs is a bitch. Work life is not great, but I’m sure comp is very solid
Had several friends there, all worked til 1-5am and had negative HR experiences when they were at breaking point
Do people actually like DD or have a passion for it? Legit question. If so, why?
Weekend work is rare at lek but weekday hours seemed to average 14-20 with no breaks, until you quit
I’m talking about CDDs too. You’re right, the 10 day sprints are brutal. Thankfully I’ve only been on a few of them. I wouldn’t characterize them as the norm really
