SF is brutal but you can live in the East Bay for less - and it’s nicer. Less fog, less wind, less poop.
If you have a roommate(s), SF is super doable at 60k+, as long is there is growth potential where you go so you can eventually start to save (in the early days, you have to prioritize quality of life over saving). It’s when you want your own spot that it gets harder in SF.
Put in the time and you can find affordable in SF. And when I say put in the time, Craigslist like it’s your job for three weeks.
Recommend checking out Trulia to see which areas are costing how much.
Thanks S1. I have a general idea of housing costs but was more curious as to comfortable salary bands to look for. Looking to make the move from east coast soonish. For example, I know that one can get by (though humbly) in LA @ 60k, but certainly not the case for SF.
PDX is expensive now.
What's expensive to you? 2k for a 900 sq ft 1 bedroom?
SF you can't get a 1 bed/1 bath for less than 2k. PDX cost of housing is MUCH cheaper. LA is a hit or a miss depending on your area but it's within 200 per month on rent for SF.
Avg 1 bedroom coat in SF is 3500. You can find good places for 2800 but it’s incredibly competitive. cohabitation is a must but you can get by on 80k
I wouldn't say you can get by in LA on $60k unless you have roommates. If you live alone, most of your $ is going to go toward rent and your car and you won't have much of a life bc you won't be able to afford anything else.
