Already feeling burnt out but does this damage reputation or make it difficult to come back to the same industry?
Not exactly frowned upon, but if it's early in your career it might not be the best move unless you've got some serious skills to flex/test in another industry or area. Media planning may not be super glamorous 75% of the time but it's super analytical and fun when you fully understand how quickly you can grow based on your level of drive.
I wish I’d taken a break early on, but I had the same thoughts. Now (being a bit older and grayer) I know it would have been great, and done me a world of good. This business has some stigmas, but in reality good things will happen to good people over the long term.
Don’t worry about what others will think. Just do what you need to do. Probably will be understood and not looked down upon, but if it is - fuck em.
If you already feel burnt out as an assistant, get out now.
I got burned in my early 20s and left the industry. I came back at 29, 10 years ago, and my career is better for it. If I had 18 years of continuous agency experience, ok, I may be a title ahead or something. But I had a blast during my “break” (travel and hospitality before 08, AMAZING) and gained perspective that I don’t think I’d have if I was all agency all the time.
Early is the best time to take a break like that, IMO.
