Started as a product manager, then picked up product marketing by default as the business grew, moved into Bus Dev, back into product marketing, then commercial marketing, global brand and now run a business unit. Depends on the org, but product marketing is a natural progression done the GTM funnel. You need to learn to let go of the product a little more and focus on how the customer uses it - I found I went from being the biggest fan of my product who’d champion it to anyone to being far more critical or it’s limitations.
Wow what a run you’ve had! You should write a book
I’ve worked in product yet not been a PM. There are challenges as a PMM and often the role can be more ambiguous than other marketing roles - there can be friction with PM that is healthy and at other times, awkward (just because the feature took a long time to build doesn’t mean the customer is interested). There is education to be done by PMM for other teams: no, we are not a collateral factory and our job is not to put glitter on everything. As long as you are aware of the inherent challenges to PMM, your experience as a PM will 100% be a benefit to you.
I think you can make the transition from product to product marketing. Especially if you’ve been involved in user research, GTM, positioning / messaging, launch strategies - any of those.
