I have a MS in I-O Psych and I do OCM work. You don’t need a MS in I-O Psych to work in OCM. Get Prosci certified and get some project management experience.
Totally agree
Don’t waste your time or money going to graduate school. Change management is the easiest field to get into. Just tweak your resume to be more “people focused” and during the interview process say you’re passionate about people. Getting a job is easy if you can speak the language. Just watch some YouTube videos
Given that I've just rejected 15 resumes without proper CM experience with obvious clunky attempts to tweak their cvs to add 'Change Management' and people terminology, I'd recommend getting some qualification at least. You do actually need the methodology. But agreed, I wouldn't bother doing some long, time consuming post-grad. It's the methodology that will help you get and manage your first project, then you will build from there.
It depends on how you see yourself using an IO degree. If you're looking to apply IO assessment skills day to day you'll want to look into HR transformation or Talent roles. If you're interested in other types of HR roles your understanding of organizational psychology will assist indirectly in a more traditional org development/L&D role. It would also be used indirectly in other types of change management.
But thank you this was helpful!
The thing that helped me the most was getting a PROSCI certification
I was/am in the same boat as you. I’m in GDS and became really interested in pursuing an IO degree over the last year and a half. I’ve been talking to colleges and sorting out finances as I don’t have the GI bill. 🥴
I decided to go with the Prosci cert first to feel it out further and I’m so glad I did. The college courses still sound really interesting but it’s hard to justify the cost and time required when I can go deeper with Prosci for less and just get real experience (while being paid) within BAH.
Plus, my leadership has said that my getting an advanced degree doesn’t really matter to them when it comes to promotion and salary increase.
Forewarning: Prosci is like taking info in through a fire hose for three+ days straight. Get good sleep and good food prepped going into it!
Yes. Agreed. The Prosci works. Like a week. I was in comms but most of my job was CM anyway. But then the consultancies kept trying to send their juniors to manage CM so I did the week course and took on the CM myself.
Would recommend prosci and getting involved with the ACMP to do some networking
I worked in HR learning and development which has an amazingly close relationship with change management. I actively volunteered and assisted the change manager on our project. Then I looked for jobs in change with the ability to speak on my experience, challenged and contributions. I was then recommended by the change consultant on my project to join their consulting firm.
BA1 for sure, it was hard for me to initially transition to learning and change. I was very persistent and volunteered at my company (at the time a regional bank) to train and create resources for my colleagues. I created a portfolio of resources that I used and also went to grad school for HR learning and development. Luckily I was able to finally get a position in Hr learning and immediately was put in a large Workday ERP initiative. That gave me exposure and experience to do official change management work. Most of my journey was persistently volunteering for type of work I like and applying for jobs continually
For reference, I have GI bill so if I did go back to school it would likely be free. But definitely hear what everyone is saying. Think I’m going to pursue prosci.
