Currently live in NYC and I absolutely hate it as I love mountains and playing outdoors. I can either relocate now and have a stagnant but decent career that will allow me to enjoy my life. Yet, I also have ambition to climb up this corporate ladder in NYC and grind out here and hope to retire sooner and live wherever I want hopefully in 15 years or so and meantime travel occasionally to enjoy those things. Please share your wisdom. I need some advice. My LOS is pretty much exclusively NYC.

I think you can still have a decent career outside of nyc.

Move to NJ. Best of both worlds

What is so wrong with NJ? I don’t get it

One of my old tax partners suddenly passed away within a year of retiring after “grinding it out” for an entire career. Do what you love while you can.

Sadly, there have been several people I have known who have passed away this last year only one or two years into retirement (with earlier retirements). It made me realize that we shouldn’t be living for retirement as we have no clue if it is guaranteed.

Switch LOS a and have a successful career someplace you love living. NYC isn’t the only place to have engaging, challenging, rewarding careers.

I started out in NYC. Lived in several cities throughout my career. Your life and career are what you make them.

likeuplifting

Move to the west coast. You get big city life, beaches, and snow/mountains all within 2 hours drive of each other in a given day, and still have the career opportunities.

Life is too short. You need to be near those things that make you happiest!

like

I’m sure there are going to be people encouraging you on both sides of things; personally I relocated knowing it would limit my career but offer me a better life and I’ve never regretted it. Life goes by so quickly, you never know what’s going to happen in 15 years I wouldn’t wait to start the living you want.

Life is too short to hate where you live. Bust a move.

What about moving North of the city where you can be near the mountains and also an hour away from work? Just a thought.

EY has offices in Charlotte, NC, Chattanooga, TN and Greenville, SC. All very close to mountains.

Colorado maybe? Love it’s nature. Also a big fan of New England states

I'm the Canadian version of you. I have a similar desire and I'm in Toronto. So maybe not quite the same grind as NYC but still not great, and also Toronto area is as flat as a slightly uneven pancake.

I'm thinking about moving to the Vancouver area within 2 years for mountains.

I say go for it

Don’t want to drive 700 miles per week M-F. What will dual model be like going forward? 1-2 times week, 4-5 month? Seems like tax was more flexible than audit pre-Covid
