It’s very different. A lot of people live in Dallas (myself included) because they can have a solid quantity of life and it’s easy and cheap to travel to other places, not because they love Dallas itself. People are pretty friendly in both places but Dallas is definitely more like LA than SD culture wise in that it’s quite “flashy.”
Yes there are lots of young professionals (4th biggest metro in the US). I’m married and came with my spouse from elsewhere but from my single friends would say it’s pretty similar to any bigger city. It’s probably slightly less casual than NYC for example, probably due to a smaller supply of tourists and the fact that Dallas isn’t a city that as many people come to just for a few years but it’s a big enough place that you can find just about anything you’re into. It’s not a huge metro area for outdoorsy stuff so if you’re really into surfers (for example), your supply will be constrained and you won’t have as many options for some of the outdoorsy things that are big parts of the southern California lifestyle for many.
You definitely won’t get the SD beaches nor the outdoor activities. Overall Dallas is nice place, but it isn’t the most exciting place to live. It’s a little boring, especially in the hot summer months like right now.
