When he is ready, treat your Dad like you’d treat any other client. Come up with a brief. Get to work on his campaign. I don’t know him, but if he’s got that mad-scientist thing going on, don’t be afraid to Queer Eye him a little. This absolutely is not his end, but he’s probably going to need some support that someone in our industry is uniquely suited to provide.
I’m sending you both good luck!
My dad went through the same. It’s awful. Give him a little time to deal with it. Then quickly get to work getting him social and active so he doesn’t fall into despair. If there is a particular newspaper or magazine (esp in his native language) he likes, get a subscription to keep him reading. I don’t know if the dm thing still works here (?) but happy to talk more if it would help. We are about 5 years out of this experience and there’s a lot I’d do differently
My mother went through this. American companies really like to layoff people in the target of 5-10 years before retirement age.
If they can't afford to retire, or aren't ready to, they usually need a lot of help getting right back on the horse with LinkedIn, resumes, and where to search.
Best of luck to your family with this.
This happened to my mom. She was laid off at 60 from the company she worked at for 25 years. She never graduated college, had 40 years of experience and found it nearly impossible to get a job. She finally found one making 1/3 of her salary. She's not ready to retire so she's done her best to make it work. It's so sad!
My (single) mom went through this at 58. Fired to hire someone younger and less expensive. Limited retirement savings, and couldn’t find another senior paralegal job at the same pay level. She got ready to sell her house, but miraculously, they hired her back 3 months later. But it’s only a matter of time.
I’ve never been more grateful for my job, nor more panicked about my future. 🙏
I'm going through this with my parents and it's really hard so I definitely I feel for you. One mistake I made early on was trying to micro-manage my mom's job hunt and resume overhaul and what I came to realize was she needed empathy more than anything else. I recently hired a career counselor to work with her and it's been helpful so far. This frees up time so I can focus on providing her emotional support.
Good luck. Your father will be okay and is lucky to have you!
I wish I had any advice. I don’t. But wishing your dad the best.
