Parents to be: Has anyone not changed their last name and come up with a compromise for naming your kids’ last names? It’s strange to me that the dad’s last name is still the default whether or not the mom took his name. Partners: what would you think if a first year associate tells you she is pregnant? And what advise would you give about telling my partners? It was totally unplanned so now I am scared that this may hurt my career and I would be seen as not being committed to the job. This will be my second kid but we had our first while I was in law school. Most of the partners I am working with have at least two kids but also they are men. No female associates with kids in my office.

Spouse is a state department employee and currently overseas. I’m a manager with three years of experience in consulting and 8 years of experience in the military where I left as a O-3 (GS-12 equivalent). SO wants me to take a non-negotiable family member hire role at the embassy overseas for one year so we can co-locate. Job sounds interesting, but is a non-negotiable GS-6 equivalent. Family life would be great but am I derailing my career permanently? Can I explain this in the future?
