Most firms have a narrow band of associate compensation based upon graduation year. Where a lateral falls within that band depends upon the need to fill a particular need ( e.g. if they need a tax lawyer and tax lawyers are hard to find, they likely will pay more ). The quality of litigation experience is difficult to judge and likely will be discounted. However , between two candidates, one who has real experience and the other who has only done document review, the real experience will win out ( unless they are simply looking for bodies to do document review). However, in the long run trial experience will serve you well in your career.
For junior associates, at big-mid firms, where you went to law school or clerked is more valuable be that justifies a higher rate for the client. Frustrating but true. The experience is still valuable though! And you’ll get more experience at smaller firms.
