Do firms pay a higher salary for a junior associate with significant litigation experience (deps, court appearances, etc.) compared to same year associate with little or no litigation exp?

No. They’ll pay more for federal clerkship experience.

Most firms have a narrow band of associate compensation based upon graduation year. Where a lateral falls within that band depends upon the need to fill a particular need ( e.g. if they need a tax lawyer and tax lawyers are hard to find, they likely will pay more ). The quality of litigation experience is difficult to judge and likely will be discounted. However , between two candidates, one who has real experience and the other who has only done document review, the real experience will win out ( unless they are simply looking for bodies to do document review). However, in the long run trial experience will serve you well in your career.

For junior associates, at big-mid firms, where you went to law school or clerked is more valuable be that justifies a higher rate for the client. Frustrating but true. The experience is still valuable though! And you’ll get more experience at smaller firms.

Fishes need suggestions. I have been put on PIP for bad performance. I am being a part of 6 months project and project is about to complete with backend work done. I took more time for some tasks because of not knowing the technology so they highlighted that and my senior send emails to HR to put me on PIP. What should I do ? Acknowledge PIP ? Or resign? Or let them terminate me so I can claim salary of three months as fnf settlement? Getting confused, please suggest.

I’m so bad at writing the background/ facts section for briefs… it always gets heavily edited and no one is giving me constructive feedback other than “advocate more”. In contrast, my legal argument section is generally without edits. For context, first defense lit job post appellate clerkship. Is this normal?? Any tips for getting better other than “advocating more”?

I’ve practiced litigation in DC for about 5+ years at a larger plaintiffs’ firm, and am considering a switch to a defense firm. Is there any insight to how many billable hours this would require, and how much time that would actually be? For reference, the firm has a 1900 billable hour requirement and the partner said I would have “no problem” fulfilling that based on the work they have.
