Big 4 experience is still much more valuable than non-B4, but the job market has also been stagnant in this field for a bit. Both things can be true.
**Much more VALUED, not necessarily more valuable- based on the experience my friends and I have had, B4 did not actually set anyone up better than non-B4 counterparts.
Big 4 experience is what you make of it. You have to stay at least 2-years and be able to articulate to both other professionals and recruiters your relevant experiences (technical and non-technical). Keeping a list of project examples throughout your career will make that easier. Also, you have to drive your own career in B4. Meaning, seek out projects / industries that interest you and then be a sponge from a learning perspective.
If you just go through the motions and don’t learn anything while at the B4 then the name recognition may get you a phone screen, but that’s it.
^ this is it
Oh it helped my career having big four
It’s still worth the stamp in my opinion
It helps from a resume branding perspective. And the “learning opportunities” were definitely there. But the job market stinks right now, and some industry employers want a mix of industry and public experience nowadays, and still want to pay less due to the current market.
IMO, it still helps, but you need to make your move without staying at the firm too long. Otherwise, you’re pigeonholing yourself by only doing one thing (audit, tax, etc) for X years too long.

There’s smart and stupid people at both big4 and non. It may help with the first job hunt but after it’s really irrelevant.
Isn’t private equity “investing “ buying up most mid size to smaller firms ?
We were lied to.
Just talked to a client hiring for lead roles in accounting. They only want people with 6-8 yrs of public accounting experience
Even though people might try to leave a big 4 firm when trying to apply for an industry position, they usually want you to have big 4 experience.
B4 was definitely preached but they pay significantly less than you can get in industry roles. And you don’t need b4 for industry, you just need the chops and knowledge. I’ve always worked in industry and while my jobs haven’t had preapproved programs for CPA work hours im still able to get my hours while also only working 37.5 hours a week, getting paid more and having real work life balance. b4 having the audacity to pay so little and expecting people to work 60+ hours a week is a big reason people are leaving
Big4 experience is only seen as valuable to certain people and certain roles. Mainly in highly applicable roles.
I am a newcomer to the country, and it has been 5 months since I started looking for a job. Despite my efforts, I am still facing many challenges in finding work. I have skills and experience, but it seems hard to get noticed by employers. I often hear that certain experiences or qualifications are highly valued, but in reality, it feels difficult to even get an interview. It’s frustrating, but I am trying to stay positive and keep applying.
